The Atomos NEON 17" 4K HDR Monitor/Recorder is a member of the NEON series, specifically engineered to deliver precise and reliable monitoring solutions for both fieldwork and editing environments. Featuring profound blacks, outstanding contrast, and a 178° viewing angle, this monitor also supports ProRes and DNx recording, enabling on-site assessment of your visuals and the rapid duplication of footage without the need for an additional recorder. This 17" device boasts a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 while accommodating DCI and UHD 4K, as well as 1080p/i and 720p formats. The monitor ensures a sharp image capable of supporting HDR and presenting a 10-bit image that meets 100% of the DCI P3 standard. With a brightness of 1000 cd/m² and 128 zones of backlighting, it achieves an impressive contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1.
The NEON is equipped with a Master Control Unit that operates the AtomosOS, which manages the monitor's functions. This Master Control Unit can be easily replaced by the user, allowing for the integration of the latest Atomos technology without necessitating the purchase of a new monitor. Remote operation of the NEON is facilitated through a downloadable application on your iOS mobile device. Video input for display can be achieved via HDMI or SDI, utilizing the included SDI expansion module, and the monitor will showcase your video accordingly. Additionally, it is capable of capturing ProRes and DNx formats onto a 2.5" SSD (not included) within the Master Caddy II or onto a separately sold AtomX SSDmini. The monitor also provides loop-through and cross-conversion outputs, supporting both Rec 709 and Dolby Vision standards.
The NEON Lineup of Monitor/Recorders
The NEON line comprises a collection of high-precision 4K HDR monitor/recorders designed for both on-set and in-studio use. These devices can be synchronized to ensure a uniform image display and recording system. Up to 1000 NEON monitors can be managed through the Atomos application on a single iOS mobile device. This setup enables each camera to output to its dedicated NEON, with the synchronized monitors recording footage that maintains consistent timecode.
Brightness
The NEON features a brightness range of 0.002 to 1000 cd/m2.
The App
NEON establishes a Bluetooth connection with your iOS mobile device that operates the Atomos iOS application, which manages the integrated AtomosOS. This application offers features such as controlled playback, slow-motion capabilities, frame-by-frame analysis, and preview tools. Additionally, multiple NEON units can synchronize with one another through sub-gigahertz RF technology, allowing for a communication range of up to 656 feet.
Imaging Tools
Imaging tools include focus peaking, exposure, calibration, zoom, waveform monitor, RGB monitor, vectorscope, and LUT selection.
SDR or HDR
Regardless of whether a project utilizes SDR or HDR, the NEON can be adjusted to align with the camera acquisition settings or specified delivery standards, such as Rec.709, Rec.2100 HLG, and PQ (ST.2084). When employing NEON for monitoring, color fidelity is maintained throughout every phase of the production pipeline. This guarantees that images appear at their finest, eliminating any unforeseen discrepancies during shooting, editing, grading, or quality control (QC).
Compatibility
The NEON series is designed to be compatible with a wide range of HDMI and SDI cameras, as well as other SDI sources. It offers support for HD (1080) at frame rates of up to 120 fps through HDMI, and DCI 4K at up to 60 fps. Additionally, it accommodates 12G or Dual 6G, as well as lower resolutions and frame rates via 1.5/3G SDI, supporting up to 2K60 with a maximum of 12 channels of embedded audio. The inclusion of SDI 3G and 12G input and output facilitates the easy looping of signals through a NEON to other devices, whether on set or in the editing suite. Furthermore, HDMI sources that do not utilize HDCP are supported at 4K up to 60 fps or HD up to 120 fps, with the capability of handling up to eight audio channels and automatically detecting HDR information frames to match the input signal type.
Recording
Each recording can be accessed immediately on the NEON without requiring media offloading. The files are recorded in 10-bit 422 format, adhering to the industry-standard Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHR/HD. AtomRemote provides functionalities to set up scene, shot, and take file naming, along with comprehensive metadata that can be utilized by editing software or asset management systems for effective orchestration.
Removable Cover Glass
The cover glass of the NEON is designed to be detachable, which aids in reducing reflections.
Inputs and Outputs
The NEON is fully equipped for your HDMI production immediately upon unboxing, compatible with HDMI 2.0b. The provided SDI Expansion Module offers 12G-SDI input, output, and loop-through capabilities, along with cross conversion between SDI and HDMI, and vice versa.
Video Output
The monitor outputs to Rec.709, HLG, PQ, LUT, and it can display in SDR or HDR, converting as necessary to Rec.709, HLG, PQ, and LUT.
Flexibility
You can record in online quality at 4Kp60 in real time with ProRes, and Avid DNx with playout to Dolby Vision.
