The Blackmagic Design PYXIS 6K Cinema Box Camera transforms the digital filmmaking advancements of the Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera 6K into a box-style configuration, featuring a secure Canon EF lens mount and customizable side panels. Its full-frame 6K sensor delivers vibrant colors, precise skin tones, and an extensive 13-stop dynamic range, thanks to the enlarged 36 x 24mm sensor. Users can record in both Blackmagic RAW and H.265 proxy formats, with the capability to upload directly to the cloud or stream to preferred social media platforms using Ethernet or mobile 4G/5G connectivity. The PYXIS is capable of capturing up to 6K Open Gate 3:2 video at 36 frames per second or 6K Anamorphic 6:5 video at 60 frames per second, along with various other resolution options.
Large-Format Digital Film Sensor
The PYXIS features an extensive 24 x 36mm full-frame sensor that boasts a native resolution of 6048 x 4032, which is three times the size of a Super 35 sensor. This capability enables the production of images with a shallow depth of field and the use of anamorphic lenses without any cropping, achieving an authentic cinematic appearance. With a dynamic range of 13 stops and dual-native ISO reaching up to 25,600, it guarantees low-noise images across various lighting environments. It is capable of recording at a rate of up to 36 frames per second at full sensor resolution or 120 frames per second in a windowed mode.
Flexible Film Formats
Utilize a diverse range of film formats and aspect ratios while maintaining high quality, facilitated by the expansive sensor. When employing the full sensor area, you can capture Open Gate 3:2 images, which simplifies the framing process during post-production. Additionally, you have the capability to work in authentic 6:5 anamorphic format without the necessity of cropping for widescreen presentations. Furthermore, you can employ a Super 35-sized window to produce a close-up rendition of your shot.
Multiple Resolutions and Frame Rates
Capture footage in standard video resolutions and frame rates ranging from HD to 6K, or take still images at 24.6 MP with the PYXIS. For enhanced frame rates, it is possible to crop the center and achieve up to 100 fps at 212 x 1184 Super 16. Additional options comprise 6K Open Gate 3:2 at 36 fps, 4832 x 4032 anamorphic at 24 fps, and 1920 x 1080 at 120 fps, along with various other resolutions.
HDR Imagery and Dual-Native ISO
A broad dynamic range of 13 stops ensures that more details are captured in both the brightest and darkest regions of your image. You can adjust the exposure for an indoor setting while still preserving the details of the bright outdoor light filtering through a window. The enhanced color range, along with the included DaVinci Resolve Studio code, provides you with creative flexibility in shaping the appearance of your footage. The dual-native ISO, reaching up to 25,600, effectively reduces grain and noise in your images while preserving the sensor's full dynamic range. ISO 400 is optimal for on-set lighting arrangements, whereas ISO 3200 is well-suited for low-light conditions. The gain is automatically adjusted as you modify your ISO, allowing for intuitive control.
Customize Your Gear
The PYXIS features mounting threads on its side, enabling the attachment of extra mounting plates and the customization of your equipment setup. The standard plate that comes with the PYXIS is secured using M4 threads and provides two 1/4"-20 threads along with one 3/8"-16 thread for connecting microphones, articulating arms, or other accessories. Additionally, an SSD plate is equipped with two hook-and-loop straps for securing a USB-C drive or mobile device, facilitating direct recording or live streaming while on the move. For further expansion, a Rosette plate is available for separate purchase.
LCD Monitor and Onboard Controls
Utilize the integrated 4" LCD touchscreen to observe and assess your shots while on set. With its full HD resolution, you can effectively frame and focus without the need for an external device. The display's maximum brightness of 1500 cd/m² guarantees clear visibility, even in bright sunlight. On-screen overlays provide essential information such as status and recording parameters, histograms, levels, frame guides, and 3D LUTs, among various other tools.
The onboard controls facilitate easy adjustments for functions such as ISO, white balance, and shutter speed. A scroll wheel enables swift modifications, while three customizable function buttons allow you to adapt your workflow according to your preferences. Additionally, the controls can be locked to prevent unintentional activation during shooting.
Post-Production File Formats
The PYXIS captures footage in Blackmagic RAW format, ensuring meticulous control over detail, exposure, and color throughout the post-production process. Additionally, it generates H.264 proxy files in real time, facilitating seamless sharing via the Blackmagic Cloud, Ethernet connections, or by linking 5G/4G mobile devices to the USB-C port for mobile connectivity. The media files are compatible with all operating systems.
Multiple Recording Options
Two built-in CFExpress Type-B card slots and a USB-C expansion port allow you to record directly to external flash media disks or SSDs.
Built-In SRT and RTMP Live Streaming
Live streaming can be conducted directly from the PYXIS on set to an alternative location utilizing SRT and RTMP protocols. Platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, and X are capable of receiving signals from the PYXIS for the purpose of live event production. For internal sharing, it is advisable to employ an ATEM Streaming Bridge to establish a wireless connection back to the studio.
Expansive Connectivity
The front panel of the PYXIS features a USB-C port designed for the Blackmagic URSA Cine EVF, along with a mini 3-pin XLR analog audio input that provides +48V Phantom power for microphone connectivity. On the rear side, the PYXIS is equipped with a headphone monitoring jack and an additional 3.5mm microphone input. The USB-C port located at the back of the camera allows for connections to recording devices or mobile data. Furthermore, a 12G-SDI output facilitates integration with a secondary monitor. A Reference/Timecode input port ensures synchronization of your sources, while an RJ45 Ethernet connection enables the uploading of footage to Blackmagic Cloud or camera control.
Powering the PYXIS can be accomplished through the locking 2-pin DC power connector or the Sony BP-U battery plate. For wireless Bluetooth control from a distance of up to 30 feet, the Blackmagic Camera Control app can be downloaded.
