The Blackmagic Design HyperDeck Studio HD Pro represents an enhanced 1 RU file-based deck that retains the operational capabilities and control typical of professional tape decks, now presented in a digital format. This iteration improves upon earlier HyperDeck Studio models by incorporating several new features, such as support for 6G-SDI, two additional SD card slots, USB-C recording output, timecode input and output, reference input and output, a reengineered jog/shuttle wheel, Gigabit Ethernet connectivity, and a front-mounted speaker.
The Studio HD Pro captures uncompressed video in 10-bit 4:2:2 color, utilizing either ProRes or DNxHD codecs, and supports H.264 compression when paired with an optional SSD drive that meets the necessary data transfer rates. With two SSD slots and two SD card slots, recording can continue almost indefinitely; as one SSD fills up, the system automatically switches to the other, and the SD card slots are designed for hot-swapping. The device is equipped with one 6G-SDI input, two 6G-SDI outputs, a loop-through SDI output, and a dedicated SDI monitor output, along with one HDMI input and one HDMI output, all capable of outputting up to DCI 4K. The ports automatically detect the incoming signal and adjust accordingly to SD, HD, or 6G-SDI formats. Additionally, the 3-pin XLR timecode input and output facilitate synchronization with other devices, enabling the creation of a timecode sync chain through daisy-chaining.
The Studio HD Pro is designed as a 1 RU rack-mountable unit, complete with built-in rackmount ears. It features illuminated buttons on the front panel for control and a robust jog/shuttle wheel for analog scrubbing. External control is supported via RS-422 using the Ref input and output ports. The USB-C port enables recording to external drives and can also connect to a computer for use as a source in web streaming. An integrated LCD on the front panel provides video monitoring and displays timecode and transport information.
Professional Broadcast Deck
The latest HyperDeck Studio recorders have undergone a comprehensive redesign, incorporating numerous new features. The upgraded models now boast broadcast-style controls on the front panel and enhanced connectivity options on the rear panel. The LCD display is compatible with both light and dark modes, while the transport control buttons have been reinforced to provide a robust, professional tactile experience. The Pro models are equipped with a machined metal search dial that offers increased weight and a soft rubberized surface for a comfortable grip. Additionally, the search dial is designed with an active clutch, akin to traditional broadcast equipment. Mastering Recorder
All models record to H.264, ProRes, and DNx files, so are perfect for recording broadcast masters. You can even use PCM or AAC audio. You get everything you need to send shows to broadcasters and for uploading to YouTube.
ISO Recording
All models feature timecode and reference generators, with outputs to loop to other HyperDecks. This means you can build a rack of HyperDeck Studios for ISO camera recording, allowing multi-cam editing after live events. You can even sync cameras to the SDI output and the SDI input has frame sync.
Digital Signage
HyperDeck Studio is ideally suited for digital signage applications, as every model is equipped with HDMI output, facilitating connections to large-screen televisions and projectors. The integrated sync generator allows for the synchronization of multiple HyperDeck units, enabling the creation of expansive multiscreen video walls. Additionally, it features FTP capabilities for file uploads and a protocol for remote operation.
Broadcast Archive
HyperDeck Studio supports all SD and HD standards so it's ideal for archiving old television shows from broadcast decks such as Digital Betacam, Betacam SP, 1", U-matic, and VHS. You can even record directly to H.264 to maximize storage. For analog decks, just add a Mini Converter Analog to SDI.
Bright Color LCD Status Display
HyperDeck Studio is equipped with conventional deck-style transport controls, which feature a search dial for jog, shuttle, and scroll functions. The compact LCD provides timecode and transport details, as well as a full-color thumbnail preview of the currently recorded or played clip. Additionally, it presents information regarding the recording status of each card, including video format, frame rate, and audio levels, all within a single display. The LCD also supports video monitoring and includes audio level meters that can be switched between technically precise VU or PPM ballistics. The Pro models are equipped with a machined metal search dial that facilitates shuttle, jog, and scroll functions, enabling quick access to clips. Any button activated on the front panel transmits a signal to the rear RS-422 remote output, allowing for looping control across multiple HyperDecks. Additionally, the Plus and Pro models come with a front panel speaker and a headphone socket for real-time audio monitoring.
Supports SD Cards, UHS-II Cards, or SSDs
All models of the HyperDeck Studio are compatible with standard SD cards and UHS-II cards, eliminating the need for costly proprietary media. Additionally, the Pro models feature two SSD slots, allowing for the use of two distinct media types. SD cards and SSDs are ideal for broadcast applications due to their compact size and affordability. When utilizing H.264 compression, the resulting files are remarkably small, enabling extended recording times even on less expensive, smaller cards. Furthermore, recording to external USB drives is also an option. With H.265, it is possible to achieve up to 58 hours of recording in 2160p60 Ultra HD or as much as 157 hours of H.264 recording in 1080p59.94 on a 1TB card, which translates to over six days of HD recording on a single 1TB card.
Dual Media Slots for Nonstop Recording
All models of the HyperDeck Studio are equipped with dual media slots, allowing for uninterrupted recording. When one recording card reaches its capacity, the system seamlessly transitions to the next card. This feature is particularly advantageous for capturing lengthy live events, as it enables the "hot swapping" of a full card for an empty one while recording continues in the other slot. Each slot is equipped with a status indicator, displaying red for recording and green for playback. Additionally, all models now support extended file recordings to a single file, facilitating easier file distribution. Record to External USB-C Media Disks
Should there be a need to record onto alternative media types, the USB-C expansion port facilitates the connection of an external flash drive for recording purposes. USB Type-C flash drives offer virtually limitless storage capacity, as they can be larger in size compared to an SD card or SSD. Furthermore, it is feasible to record directly onto a disk array intended for editing, eliminating the need to transfer files prior to commencing post-production. Simply transfer the disk to a computer and begin editing immediately. Additionally, one can incorporate a Blackmagic MultiDock 10G, which features four individual SSD media slots, thereby enhancing compatibility with SSD media for the HyperDeck Studio Mini and Plus models. Popular ProRes, DNx, and H.264 Files
HyperDeck is compatible with the most widely used codecs available today. Each model features DNx and ProRes file formats. Incredibly Fast Network File Transfers
All HyperDeck models allow media files to be uploaded remotely, using simple FTP client software. For remote deck control, all models use an easy-to-learn text-based protocol, so you can use a simple terminal app like Telnet to test control commands. Simply log into the HyperDeck and then type "play" or "record" and it will execute the command. If you combine the control protocol and file transfers with a HyperDeck connected to a large USB Type-C disk array, you get a fantastic broadcast server for ingest, media management, and play out.
Traditional RS-422 Broadcast Deck Control
The most popular control connection used on broadcast decks since the early 1980s is the RS-422 protocol. Originally developed by Sony, RS-422 is used on almost all broadcast gear. HyperDeck Studio features wide protocol support so you can connect it directly to broadcast systems. It also supports extra commands for the Advanced Media Protocol for managing disk recorders. Built-In Timecode and Sync Generators
With a timecode and sync generator built into all models, you can stack multiple units for digital signage or multi-channel recording. Each HyperDeck has dedicated outputs for reference and timecode, direct from the internal sync and timecode generators. The generators "free run" unless reference or timecode is connected to the inputs, and then generators will automatically lock. This means you can loop from HyperDeck to HyperDeck to create perfectly timed array or recorders.
