Revolving around a new full-frame stacked sensor, updated AF performance, and a refined body design, the EOS R3 is the first 3-Series camera since the film era and plants itself as a fast-shooting, flexible, and contemporary mirrorless camera.
Among the most significant technologies in the R3 is the 24.1MP stacked sensor which affords truly fast readout speeds to help reduce rolling shutter distortion and benefit fast continuous shooting and video recording applications. This full-frame BSI CMOS sensor has an updated DIGIC X processor, which helps boost the overall speed for up to 30 fps continuous shooting with an electronic shutter, 6K 60p raw and 4K 120p video recording, plus intelligent Dual Pixel CMOS II autofocus with Eye Control AF for intuitive focus point selection.
The R3 is also the first EOS R-series camera to feature a built-in vertical grip, making it an ergonomic choice for long shooting times and for seamlessly switching between horizontal and vertical shooting orientations. The rugged body design also incorporates a high-resolution 5.76m-dot OLED EVF and a 3.2" vari-angle touchscreen LCD, along with dual memory card slots, wireless and wired connectivity, and an updated Multi-Function Shoe design for expanded accessory compatibility.
Full-Frame Stacked Sensor and DIGIC X Processor
24.1MP BSI Stacked CMOS Sensor
The R3 introduces a groundbreaking advancement for EOS cameras with its stacked sensor architecture, which significantly enhances read-out speeds. This innovation minimizes rolling shutter distortion and facilitates improved shooting capabilities. The 24.1MP full-frame CMOS sensor is also back-illuminated, allowing for more effective light capture, resulting in lower noise levels, greater clarity, and more accurate color reproduction, especially in low-light environments.
DIGIC X Processor
The enhanced DIGIC X processor enhances the new sensor architecture by providing efficient processing capabilities and enabling the execution of multiple high-speed functions concurrently. This includes the ability to capture images at 30 frames per second while simultaneously conducting autofocus and autoexposure assessments prior to each shot. Additionally, the processor facilitates an extensive sensitivity range from ISO 100 to 102400, which can be further expanded to ISO 50 to 204800, allowing for effective performance across diverse lighting environments.
Electronic Shutter
One of the primary advantages of the stacked sensor architecture is its electronic shutter capability, which allows for continuous shooting at a rate of up to 30 frames per second for as many as 150 raw images, all while minimizing rolling shutter distortion. In manual or shutter-priority settings, the maximum shutter speed reaches 1/64,000 of a second, and electronic shutter synchronization with flash is achievable at speeds of up to 1/180 of a second. This adaptable shutter feature operates silently by default, yet it can be complemented by a selection of audible shutter sounds, enabling subjects to easily discern when a photograph has been captured.
A manual shutter is also available, and offers a top continuous shooting speed of 12 fps, with a buffer of more than 1000 frames, along with a top flash sync speed of 1/250 sec.
6K Raw and DCI/UHD 4K Video Recording
The 24MP full-frame sensor significantly enhances video performance by enabling high-resolution 6K raw 12-bit internal recording and uncropped 4K 120p 10-bit recording with Canon Log 3. Both 6K and 5.6K recording areas facilitate oversampled DCI and UHD 4K shooting, resulting in improved sharpness, minimized moiré, and reduced noise levels. Additionally, HDR-PQ recording is supported for in-camera HDR production and external recording through the HDMI port, allowing for a clean 4K output at rates of up to 60 fps. The camera offers various compression options, including All-I, IPB, and IPB Light, and supports Dual Pixel CMOS AF II during 6K raw shooting. Furthermore, it allows for unlimited recording durations and is equipped with microphone and headphone ports, as well as a micro-HDMI Type-D port for seamless output to an external recorder.
Autofocus and Image Stabilization
Dual Pixel CMOS AF II
The enhanced Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system incorporates 1053 automatic autofocus points that span the entire sensor area, resulting in quicker, more responsive, and more accurate focusing capabilities. This advanced phase-detection focusing system boasts improved subject detection and tracking, with the capability to intelligently identify eyes, faces, heads (including those wearing helmets), animals, and vehicles. The tracking mechanism will automatically engage with these subjects, ensuring consistent sharp focus during continuous shooting. Additionally, the low-light performance of Dual Pixel AF II has been refined, allowing it to achieve focus in conditions as low as -7.5 EV, ensuring precise focusing even in nighttime scenarios.
Eye Control AF
Canon is reintroducing Eye Control AF with the R3, marking its entry into the realm of EOS digital cameras. This feature, which gained popularity during the film era, has been enhanced to integrate seamlessly with the intelligent focusing capabilities of Dual Pixel CMOS AF. With Eye Control AF, photographers can direct the focus point by merely gazing through the electronic viewfinder. The camera will then utilize subject tracking and detection to ensure that the selected subject remains in sharp focus.
Sensor-Shift Image Stabilizer
The In-Body Image Stabilizer (IBIS) corrects unwanted camera shake when shooting handheld, helping in low-light conditions and reducing shake when recording videos. This 5-axis system can be used in conjunction with lenses featuring optical image stabilization to compensate for up to 8 stops of camera shake depending on the specific lens.
Body Design
5.76m-Dot EVF and Vari-Angle Touchscreen LCD
The device is equipped with a remarkable 5.76 million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder, providing clear and high-resolution eye-level viewing. This viewfinder, with a magnification of 0.76x, takes advantage of a stacked sensor design, enabling blackout-free viewing when utilizing an electronic shutter. Additionally, it supports a refresh rate of 120 frames per second, ensuring realistic motion representation. The expansive viewfinder area also allows for the display of comprehensive shooting information, which can rotate with the camera for a more intuitive viewing experience.
The 3.2-inch vari-angle LCD enhances usability when capturing images from high, low, or front-facing angles. This adaptable positioning, coupled with a touchscreen interface and an impressive resolution of 4.15 million dots, facilitates vibrant playback and effective live-view monitoring.
Professional-Grade Body Construction
Drawing inspiration from the flagship DSLR models, the R3 showcases a sturdy and ergonomic body design, complete with an integrated grip that enhances comfort during shooting in both horizontal and vertical positions. The R3 incorporates the smart controller and multi-controller found in earlier EOS cameras, facilitating an intuitive handling experience. Its rear layout resembles that of the 1D X Mark III and R5 models. This larger body design accommodates the high-capacity LP-E19 battery, allowing for prolonged shooting sessions, and is constructed to meet the same weather-sealed standards as the premier EOS-1D X Mark III.
Dual Memory Card Slots
A CFexpress Type B slot and a UHS-II SD slot offer file-saving flexibility. The CFexpress Type B slot should be prioritized for 6K video recording and fast continuous shooting, and the SD slot is a convenient alternative for backups or less speed-critical shooting.
Connectivity
The camera offers a wide range of wired and wireless connectivity options, facilitating various methods for transferring photos, videos, and voice memos. It features a 1000BASE-T Ethernet interface along with an RJ-45 port, ensuring a rapid and secure wired connection. For wireless transfers and remote control, both 5GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are supported. Additionally, users of certain smartphones can utilize their mobile data to share files directly from the camera over 5G networks when connected to the R3 via USB. Furthermore, the device is equipped with a built-in GPS module that is compatible with GLONASS and QZSS, enabling in-camera location tagging to efficiently address geotagging and timestamp requirements.
