Canon has unveiled the RF-S 7.8mm f/4 STM Dual VR Lens, designed as an entry-level stereoscopic VR lens for individuals interested in transforming everyday experiences into augmented reality using the Canon EOS VR System. This lens is compatible with APS-C EOS mirrorless cameras, such as the EOS R7, and features autofocus capabilities. It offers a 60° field of view that closely resembles human vision, enabling the capture of photos and videos that can be enjoyed on widely used headsets, including the Apple Vision Pro and the Meta Quest 3.

Auto Focusing

This device incorporates a gear-type stepping motor (STM) equipped with a dual-lens autofocus system, enabling synchronized movement of the left and right lenses. This design simplifies autofocus operation, making it comparable to that of a standard RF lens. A notable aspect of RF lenses that improves usability is the electronic focusing/control ring. Users can modify the left-right focus differential through the focusing/control ring, as well as via the left-right focus difference adjustment mode switch.

Design and Construction

The lens is capable of producing content in Spatial, 3D 180°, and 3D formats, utilizing a straight path optical system that incorporates two ultra-low dispersion elements to minimize chromatic aberrations. Comprising nine elements arranged in five groups, the lens is equipped with Canon's Super Spectra Coating, which effectively reduces ghosting and flare. It accommodates light-modifying filters with a 58mm front thread, and its minimum focusing distance of 5.9 inches ensures that subjects are rendered with clarity. Additionally, the lens is both compact and lightweight, extending merely 1.6 inches from the camera and weighing just 4.6 ounces.
