Canon EOS C50 Full-Frame Cinema Camera | Canon RF
Equipped with a newly engineered 7K full-frame CMOS sensor, the Canon EOS C50 Cinema Camera stands as a compact yet powerful solution for all your video and photography requirements. The EOS C50 can record 3:2 Open Gate video at 4K120 and raw video up to 7K60, in addition to capturing 32MP still images in photo mode. You can effortlessly switch between dedicated photo and video modes, ensuring a seamless hybrid shooting experience. The C50 also boasts advanced features such as Dual-Pixel CMOS AF II, simultaneous 2K crop recording, built-in Frame.io Camera-to-Cloud integration, and XC protocol support for remote operation. Furthermore, the camera comes with a detachable top handle that provides two 3-pin XLR inputs along with onboard controls for convenient adjustments.
7K Full-Frame CMOS Sensor
The C50 features a 7K back-illuminated full-frame CMOS sensor, which produces images with minimal noise, enhancing its performance across diverse lighting conditions. This capability optimizes the camera's extensive 15+ stop dynamic range when operating in full-frame sensor mode. The utilization of 7K resolution offers increased versatility in post-production, including the ability to create oversampled 4K60 footage.
3:2 Open Gate Sensor Mode
The first of the cinema EOS line to do so, the C50 offers Open Gate recording options for the use of the full dimensions of the sensor. Select Full Frame 3:2 from the Sensor mode section of the main menu to shoot using the full area of the sensor. Then you can use that information in post to crop or reframe your footage to aspect ratios of your choice. This proves useful when shooting with anamorphic lenses.
Internal Raw and High Frame Rate Recording
The C50 offers additional recording options, including 7K60 Cinema RAW Light, which features three 12-bit recording modes: HQ, ST, and LT. The standard XF-AVC codec is provided in a 10-bit 4:2:2 format, ensuring rich detail and smooth imagery at frame rates of up to 120 fps without any cropping. Furthermore, you have the capability to record in both fast and slow motion, reaching up to 4K120 and 2K180. Additional recording codecs available are XF-AVC S and XF-HEVC S, which facilitate easy management of naming systems and folder structures while maintaining metadata.
Anamorphic De-Squeeze
The C50 includes built-in support for anamorphic de-squeeze. You can preview your footage with greater accuracy while shooting at various magnification ratios by selecting the de-squeeze options available in the camera menu: 2x, 1.8x, 1.5x, 1.3x.
Dual-Base ISO
The base ISOs of 800 and 6400 in Canon Log 2 gamma recording mode optimize the complete dynamic range of the C50's sensor. Additionally, the camera is equipped with Auto Selection, which allows for automatic switching between one of the two base ISO levels and an alternative level, all while preserving the dynamic range.
Dual-Pixel CMOS AF II
Maintain focus on your subject, regardless of whether you are capturing in slow or fast motion. The Dual-Pixel CMOS AF II supports speeds of up to 4K120 and 2K150, guaranteeing that your subject stays in focus even at high frame rates. The C50's sensor features enhanced light-capturing efficiency, expanding the area of the sensor available for autofocus. An internal subject detection algorithm utilizing deep learning technology enables you to prioritize face/eye detection for either the left or right eye in both humans and animals. Additionally, animal detection has been updated to include birds.
Simultaneous Crop Recording
Select from three format options—9:17, 9:16, or 1:1—to automatically crop your image while capturing in DCI or UHD 4K resolutions. The cropped section of the frame will be preserved in your chosen aspect ratio and will be in 2K resolution. This process significantly decreases the turnaround time when preparing videos for social media deliverables.
Dual Card Slots
The C50 features two distinct card slots—one for CFexpress Type-B and another for an SD card. Both slots allow for simultaneous recording, even when utilizing raw codecs. All recording options are saved to the CFexpress card that you insert, while sub-recording and proxy options are saved to the SD card that you insert.
Native Vertical Shooting UI
The C50's vertical shooting user interface has made vertical shooting even more intuitive. You can easily switch to the native Vertical Shooting mode to adjust your display accordingly. Additionally, it offers touch controls for starting and stopping recording while in vertical screen mode. All aspects of the shooting user interface, menu settings, and adjustments for LCD brightness have been reconfigured to enhance the filming experience.
Detachable Handle Unit
The detachable handle unit that is included enhances the connectivity options for your C50 handheld setup. It features two standard 3-pin XLR inputs equipped with 48V phantom power, enabling the integration of shotgun microphones. Additionally, a built-in start/stop recording button along with a zoom rocker provides easily accessible controls for filming from low angles.
Comprehensive Connectivity
The C50 camera body offers an extensive range of ports, allowing you to assemble a camera rig that is optimally tailored to your production requirements. The available connections comprise an HDMI output, a headphone output, a timecode port, a 3.5mm microphone input, a 2.5mm remote port, and a versatile USB-C port suitable for either a smartphone or an Ethernet adapter. Additionally, the camera is equipped with a smart hot shoe designed for wireless audio communication.
XC Protocol
The integrated Wi-Fi enables the XC Protocol for the C50, which is Canon's remote control system based on IP technology. The XC Protocol permits the operation of the camera through IP-based Canon control units such as the RC-IP1000 or RC-IP100, while external remote control panels can adjust the camera settings. For enhanced connectivity options, a USB-C to Ethernet adapter should be utilized. Canon's Remote Control Camera application, along with the Multi-Camera Control app, can manage camera settings and oversee multiple cameras simultaneously. The C50 is compatible with SRT protocols, allowing for direct IP streaming of audio and video to suitable sources.
Frame.io Camera-to-Cloud Integration
The C50 is inherently compatible with Frame.io's Camera-to-Cloud technology. It allows for the immediate transmission of proxy files following internal recording, facilitating efficient post-production workflows. These proxy files do not necessitate any further processing or conversion, enabling them to be viewed, shared, and edited from remote locations.
Virtual Production Support
The C50 can output CV Protocol to multiple devices, easily slotting into virtual production workflows. Lens metadata is extracted using the CV Metadata Extraction plugin on compatible computers.
Mirrorless Photo Mode
Transform the C50 from a cinema camera into a fully equipped mirrorless camera with just a switch. The C50 utilizes the well-known EOS R series menu system for user-friendly operation. Hybrid photographers no longer need to carry two cameras simultaneously for a more efficient workflow. The Full-Frame sensor provides a shallow depth of field with attractive bokeh, accommodating a standard ISO of up to 64,000. Still image resolutions can achieve 32MP, and it is possible to reach a maximum of 40 frames per second during high-speed continuous shooting. Dual-Pixel CMOS AF II remains available in this mode.
