The Canon RF 7-14mm f/2.8-3.5 L Fisheye STM combines an expansive field of view with unique fisheye rendering, making it an ultra-wide zoom ideal for capturing stunning, dynamic images and videos. As the inaugural fisheye lens in the RF series, this lens offers an exceptionally wide 190° angle of view, providing both circular and diagonal coverage that varies with focal length and format, along with a variety of practical new design features tailored for use with this distinctive lens.

Distinct Field of View

Fisheye Rendering and Image Quality

The ultra-wide-angle fisheye lens provides an exceptionally distinctive rendering characterized by significant distortion, making it an ideal companion for action sports and dynamic subjects. Additionally, it serves as a versatile choice for landscape, nature, underwater, astrophotography, and architectural photography applications.

The optical design features five ultra-low dispersion glass elements along with two aspherical elements; these specialized optics enhance color accuracy and sharpness while maintaining a compact and lightweight structure. Furthermore, Air Sphere (ASC) and Super Spectra (SSC) coatings minimize flare and ghosting, resulting in enhanced contrast

Zoom Design

In comparison to traditional focal length zoom lenses, the variation in focal lengths of this fisheye zoom also influences the fisheye distortion and the coverage of the frame. When set to the 7mm position on a full-frame camera, this lens acts as a completely circular fisheye with a 190° angle of view. Conversely, at the 14mm position on a full-frame camera, it functions as a diagonal, frame-filling fisheye with a 180° angle of view. For use with APS-C-format cameras, there is a 'C' marking on the zoom ring at approximately 8.7mm, which signifies the point at which vignetting ceases and the lens will entirely cover the sensor area. Between the 7mm and 8.7mm settings, the fully circular image will not be contained within the frame, resulting in considerable vignetting.

Close-Focus Creativity

Utilizing the unique characteristics of a fisheye lens, close-up photography emphasizes the remarkable distortion and spatial perception that the lens's bulbous design, with a 180-190° angle of view, offers. This lens features a minimum focusing distance of merely 5.9 inches, which translates to a closest working distance of about 2 inches from the lens's front. This capability enables you to position the lens in close proximity to subjects, thereby accentuating and amplifying shapes, textures, and other intricate details, while allowing background elements to remain visible yet curve away, creating a distinctive fisheye effect.

Built for Hybrid Creation

  • The fisheye effect is equally striking and versatile for video creators; the immense depth of field, unique distortion, and broad angle of view make for a unique tool to render singular subjects in space.

  • Unique among fisheye lenses with a bulbous front element, this lens's unique ability to accept drop-in filters makes it compatible with Canon's own variable ND filter to help better control exposure while recording.

  • Focus breathing is also virtually non-existent, thanks to a rear focus design, which helps maintain a consistent composition while racking focus. Also, the lens has internal focus and internal zoom for easier use on a gimbal.

  • Using a lead-screw type STM and the same position-detecting sensor from Nano USM technology, this lens's autofocus is fast, accurate, and responsive for photo while also offering smooth and quiet performance that benefits video applications.

  • The extreme angle of view of the lens also lends itself to 2D monoscopic VR content and the lens is fully supported by the Canon EOS VR System application for VR image creation.

Design Details

  • The lens is relatively compact and lightweight, measuring 4.3" long and weighing just over 1 lb.

  • A removable petal-style EW-76 Lens Hood is included, which makes the overall lens length 5.2" when attached. This hood cannot be reverse-mounted onto the lens. When attached, vignetting will be visible at all focal lengths shorter than 14mm when used with a full-frame camera; no vignetting is seen on APS-C cameras using focal lengths between 8.7-14mm.

  • Customizable Control Ring and Lens Function Button can be programmed to control a range of shooting settings.

  • Zoom Limit/Lock switch is used to set a zoom range for consistent framing or can lock the lens in place to prevent unwanted movement during transport or shooting.

  • L-Series level durability and weather resistance for working in inclement conditions.

  • The front element also features a fluorine coating that repels water and oils and is easy to clean.

Unique Drop-In Filter Design

  • One of the most distinctive design features of this lens is Canon's rear drop-in filter system, which was introduced alongside their Drop-In Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R.

  • This filter system is designed to accommodate the bulbous, protruding front lens element, allowing for the use of a switchable filter system at the rear of the lens. This approach is different from traditional cut gel filter holders, as it enables filters to be changed without the need to remove the lens.

  • The system employs self-contained mounted filters that can be easily slid into the rear of the lens; a clear filter is provided with the lens, and optional Drop-In Variable Neutral Density Filter A and Drop-In Circular Polarizing Filter A are also available.
