Developed at the M.I.T. Media Lab utilizing advanced skateboard technology, the Cinetics CineSkates Camera Dolly Wheels are designed for the Joby GorillaPod Focus Tripod. This set of three wheels attaches to the GorillaPod, enabling a remarkable array of fluid motion shots that enhance the vibrancy of scenes. From the outset, CineSkates were conceived with the potential for various accessories, yet they are currently optimized for use with the Joby GorillaPod Focus mini tripods. The synergy between these two products has yielded an impressive range of creative possibilities, perhaps even exceeding the expectations of both Cinetics and Joby, akin to pulling a thousand rabbits from a small hat. The CineSkates can be affixed to the GorillaPod, allowing for smooth movement in numerous sophisticated configurations.
So, what exactly is a GorillaPod? Firstly, it is not included with the CineSkates; secondly, it is a compact tripod with legs that can bend at multiple points, enabling it to adapt to virtually any setting and closely frame a subject. It is akin to what Tom needed when searching for Jerry in his mouse hole. The GorillaPod could have been positioned to allow the camera mounted on it to be inverted and focused directly into the hole, which is why it is referred to as the GorillaPod Focus. Now, envision this setup on wheels. The GorillaPod requires a ball head for optimal use; if you possess one, you are well-equipped. If not, Joby offers the BallHead X as an option. For the CineSkates, lightweight ball heads with extensive range of motion, such as the BallHead X, are ideal.
Regarding the time-lapse functionality, the CineSkates wheels feature a ruler system with markings, along with a tic mark located on the wheel bracket. This design allows for incremental shooting at specified tic distances, requiring the user to advance the wheel by one tic after each shot. Concerning the previously mentioned expansion, plans are underway to extend compatibility to additional tripods. Future products from Cinetics will include a frame designed for heavier cameras and a motorized wheel, all of which will be compatible with CineSkates. Currently, a mini ballhead and a Glif iPhone 4/4S tripod mount are available for use alongside CineSkates and the GorillaPod. As for the construction of CineSkates, the brackets are crafted from lightweight and durable injection-molded plastic. The wheels are produced from soft urethane, while the bearings consist of hardened chromium steel. The complete set is finished with a steel adjustable handle, low-profile black-oxide steel hardware, and a portable neoprene case. Each CineSkates set comprises 44 parts, predominantly manufactured in the USA, with assembly taking place entirely in Austin, Texas.
