  • 45.7MP FX-Format BSI CMOS Sensor
  • EXPEED 6 Image Processing Engine
  • UHD 4K30 Video; N-Log & 10-Bit HDMI Out
  • 493-Point Phase-Detect AF System
  • 9 fps Continuous Shooting; ISO 64-25600

Nikon has advanced its imaging technology with the introduction of the Z7 Mirrorless Camera, referred to as "The Perfectionist," alongside the innovative Z System. This high-resolution FX-format camera features the Z Mount, characterized by a large diameter and a short 16mm flange distance, enabling Nikon to design compact yet powerful cameras and to develop superior optics. The Z7 is one of the initial models in this series, equipped with a 45.7MP BSI CMOS sensor and the EXPEED 6 Image Processing Engine, which together provide exceptional image quality and rapid performance, with a native sensitivity range spanning ISO 64-25600.

The sensor incorporates an advanced phase-detect autofocus system with 493 points that cover 90% of the image area, complemented by 5-axis Vibration Reduction technology to ensure stable photos and videos, regardless of the lens in use. This sophisticated hybrid autofocus system also enhances video performance. The Z7 supports UHD 4K recording at up to 30 frames per second and is compatible with the N-Log gamma profile, along with a 10-bit HDMI output, facilitating the production of cinema-quality video. Furthermore, the high-resolution sensor allows for an 8K Time-Lapse mode.

Similar to many mirrorless systems, the Z Series offers a more compact design compared to traditional DSLRs, and the Z7 exemplifies this with its streamlined form and lightweight construction, while still providing the weather sealing and ergonomic features that Nikon is renowned for. The camera is equipped with multiple displays for user convenience, including a 0.80x 3.6m-dot electronic viewfinder with NIKKOR optics and a Fluorine coating for enhanced clarity. The rear features a 3.2" 2.1m-dot tilting touchscreen LCD, and the top includes a dot-matrix OLED for quick access to settings. Additionally, the camera supports both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.

45.7MP FX-Format BSI CMOS Sensor and EXPEED 6 Processor

The camera is equipped with a 45.7MP BSI CMOS sensor, which facilitates high-resolution photography, exceptional performance in low-light conditions, and rapid readout speeds, enhancing continuous shooting, video recording, and time-lapse capabilities. The back-illuminated architecture of the sensor provides significantly cleaner output at high sensitivities, minimizing noise even at elevated ISO levels, reaching a native ISO of 25600, while delivering vibrant and smooth images at lower sensitivities, such as ISO 64. Additionally, the sensor's design eliminates the traditional optical low-pass filter, maximizing sharpness and resolution. Complementing the sensor is the advanced EXPEED 6 image processor, which ensures remarkable speed across the camera system, enabling continuous shooting at 9 frames per second in raw format.

4K UHD Video Recording

The Z7 leverages its sensor and processor capabilities not only for still photography but also as a highly proficient multimedia camera. It supports video recording in UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) using either the full-frame or DX crop area at frame rates of 30p, 25p, or 24p. Additionally, Full HD 1080p video recording is available at up to 120p for slow-motion playback, with the option to save video files to in-camera memory cards or as uncompressed files to an external recorder via HDMI output.

The Z7 incorporates advanced video features, including N-Log gamma, which allows for the capture of flat footage that optimizes dynamic range. It also supports the output of high-quality 10-bit data through HDMI and includes an Electronic VR function for stable handheld shooting. Focus Peaking enhances manual focus control, while the Zebra Stripes feature assists in identifying overexposed areas within the frame. Audio can be recorded using the built-in stereo microphone, or an external microphone can be connected via the 3.5mm stereo jack for improved audio quality, with live monitoring available through the headphone jack.

To further enhance its video capabilities, the Z7 offers an optional ProRes RAW upgrade, which enables the camera to output ProRes RAW footage to a compatible Atomos external recorder. This upgrade enhances color grading options with the ProRes codec and allows for the output of uncompressed 12-bit raw footage via HDMI. Installation of this upgrade necessitates sending the camera to Nikon's Service Department.

8K Time-Lapse

The Z7 seamlessly integrates both still photography and videography features, enabling the creation of 8K time-lapses through the Interval Timer Mode or in-camera 4K time-lapse films, allowing for the recording of up to 9999 exposures in either format. Additionally, this system incorporates a silent interval timer that operates without generating shutter noise, minimizes wear on the shutter mechanism, and is designed to be energy efficient, thereby extending battery life.

493-Point Phase-Detect AF System

The sensor is equipped with an array of 493 phase-detect autofocus points that span 90% of the image area in both vertical and horizontal orientations. This configuration enables rapid and precise focusing for still images and video, ensuring effective subject tracking even near the edges of the frame. For video recording, hybrid autofocus is employed, seamlessly transitioning between phase-detect and contrast-detect systems to ensure smooth focus adjustments during shooting. Furthermore, the newest NIKKOR Z lenses have been designed for quiet operation.

Body Design

  • Built-in to the body is a 5-axis sensor-shift Vibration Reduction mechanism for up to 5 stops of stabilization regardless of the lens used. This system also works with adapted lenses when using the optional FTZ Adapter where 3-axis stabilization is used.

  • A large 3.2" 2.1m-dot LCD screen is available for bright, clear, and vivid image playback and live view shooting. The screen has a tilting design to benefit working from both high and low angles, and it is also a touchscreen for more intuitive operation, navigation, and settings control.

  • A 3.6m-dot electronic finder is present for comfortable eye-level viewing. It has a high 0.80x magnification and uses NIKKOR optics to guarantee a sharp, clear image. The finder also has a Fluorine coating for easier cleaning.

  • The top panel of the Z7 is configured with a dot-matrix OLED. This low-energy display provides quick access to important camera settings.

  • Configured with one CFexpress Type B/XQD memory card slot, the camera will be able to quickly save photo and video files.

  • A robust magnesium-alloy chassis is both dust- and weather-resistant to benefit working in harsh climates and inclement conditions.

  • The ergonomic grip and overall form factor is shaped to benefit handling for extended periods of time and is further accentuated by an anti-slip material and a joystick for seamless settings and focus point selection.

  • Built-in SnapBridge connectivity to enable seamless transfer of low-resolution imagery as well as remote shooting capabilities. BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) and Wi-Fi enables communication between the camera and a smart device and, additionally, the mobile device can remotely trigger the shutter and display a live view image from the camera to enable working from a distance.

  • Included EN-EL15b rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides approximately 330 shots per charge, and in-camera charging is supported. This camera is also compatible with EN-EL15 and EN-EL15a batteries, however do not support in-camera charging.

NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S Lens

Accompanying the camera body is the standard zoom NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S lens, which spans a versatile range from wide-angle to portrait lengths and maintains a constant maximum aperture of f/4. The lens's optical construction includes one aspherical element and a specialized aspherical extra-low dispersion element, both designed to significantly minimize various aberrations and distortions, ensuring high sharpness and precise color reproduction. Additionally, a Nano Crystal Coating is applied to mitigate flare and ghosting, enhancing contrast in challenging lighting situations. This lens is well-suited for both photography and videography, featuring a stepping autofocus motor that provides smooth and nearly silent autofocus operation.
