A robust and compact mirrorless system designed for emerging creators, the Nikon Z50 II Mirrorless Camera integrates a 20.9MP APS-C CMOS sensor and an interchangeable lens mount, offering a range of premium features. It is fully compatible with the complete NIKKOR Z lens collection, enabling users to enhance their content beyond what a smartphone can achieve.
20.9MP DX-Format CMOS Sensor & EXPEED 7 Image Processor
The DX-format 20.9MP CMOS sensor is integrated with the same EXPEED 7 image-processing engine utilized in its flagship full-frame counterparts, delivering a versatile combination of high sensitivity, refined image quality, rapid AI-enhanced autofocus, and continuous shooting at full resolution at rates of up to 30 frames per second. With native sensitivity values ranging from ISO 100 to 51200, this sensor is capable of performing effectively in a wide variety of lighting environments, and it can be further extended to ISO 204800 for exceptionally low-light situations. The combination of resolution and sensor size also plays a significant role in achieving clean image quality and smooth color transitions while minimizing noise across the sensitivity spectrum.
Nikon's Most Advanced Autofocus
The Z50 II utilizes advanced algorithms and deep learning technology inherited from the Z9, enabling it to identify a diverse array of subjects, including humans, animals, airplanes, and bicycles, through its sophisticated Subject Detection system that accommodates nine distinct subject types. Additionally, it features a dedicated Bird Detection mode, which is highly regarded. In Auto-Area AF mode, the camera automatically detects, focuses on, and tracks these subjects, ensuring precise focus even as they move across the frame.
Furthermore, the Eye-Detection AF has been optimized for enhanced accuracy and improved eye recognition within the scene. This feature can also be effectively combined with custom Wide-Area AF to accommodate various subject shapes and sizes.
Pre-Release Capture
The EXPEED 7 processor enables the Pre-Release Capture feature, which facilitates the capture of decisive moments by recording a burst of frames for up to one second before the shutter is fully released. When this feature is engaged, burst shooting begins as soon as the shutter is half-pressed, allowing the buffer to store the frames until the shutter is completely pressed.
UHD 4K Video Recording
The Z50 II is not only adept at capturing still images but has also enhanced its video recording capabilities. It now offers support for UHD 4K video recording at rates of up to 60 frames per second, as well as Full HD recording at up to 120 frames per second. The camera features a Product Review mode, allows for recording durations of up to two hours, includes a video self-timer, and is equipped with built-in electronic Vibration Reduction. Users can save video files either to the in-camera memory cards or to an optional external recorder via HDMI output. Furthermore, the camera supports in-camera time-lapse shooting, enabling the production of a completed UHD 4K video file directly from the device.
In a notable advancement for Nikon, the Z50 II is compliant with UAC and UAV standards for live web-streaming. It also allows for internal recording of 10-bit video using Nikon's N-Log LUT, along with the option to utilize four new RED LUTs.
Color Control for Creators
Nikon has introduced a Picture Control button on the Z50 II, allowing users to easily access its 31 built-in presets, even when in Auto mode. The color presets can now be displayed on the rear LCD screen, enabling users to visualize color adjustments in real time during the creative process. Furthermore, Creator Recipes developed by other Nikon users can be accessed via the Nikon Imaging Cloud, allowing for seamless integration with the existing presets. Additionally, Nikon offers a one-year subscription to their Cloud Picture Controls software, providing users with the opportunity to utilize their own presets alongside professional editing tools.
Body Design and Connectivity
- A large 3.2" LCD touchscreen is provided for enhanced image playback and live view shooting, delivering bright, clear, and vibrant visuals. The screen is designed with a 180° flip-under tilting mechanism, facilitating front-facing selfie captures and enabling more intuitive operation, navigation, and control of settings. The improved touchscreen now incorporates the Touch FN feature, allowing users to select the focus point using their fingertips.
- The enhanced electronic viewfinder has been reengineered to provide greater comfort for eye-level viewing. By incorporating NIKKOR optics to ensure a sharp and clear image, it now offers brightness that is double that of the previous model.
- A built-in flash and a hot shoe enable the incorporation of extra lighting in dimly lit environments, complemented by a specialized Night Portrait mode that enhances exposure balance between existing and supplementary light source.
- A headphone jack has been incorporated, serving a dual purpose as a connection point for Nikon's recently launched optional MC-DC3 Remote Release Cord. Additionally, the USB-C terminal facilitates both the charging of the camera and USB power delivery. The camera continues to include the microphone and HDMI ports found in its predecessor.
- Integrated SnapBridge connectivity facilitates the effortless transfer of low-resolution images and allows for remote shooting functionalities. The use of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Wi-Fi establishes a connection between the camera and a smart device, enabling the mobile device to remotely activate the shutter and provide a live view image from the camera, thus allowing for operation from a distance.
- The included EN-EL25a rechargeable lithium-ion battery extends camera battery life, with in-camera charging also supported.
- Single SD memory card slots supports up to the UHS-I protocol for quickly storing photo and video files.
