The I-2, Polaroid's inaugural analog instant camera equipped with manual controls, is designed to foster creative exploration and playful experimentation for photographers across all skill levels. It boasts a 98mm f/8 lens that delivers stunning bokeh effects, offers six shooting modes including full manual and multiple exposure options, and features a viewfinder that incorporates a display of the camera settings. Additionally, it includes a flash sync port for connecting external strobes and is compatible with i-Type, 600, and SX-70 Polaroid films, making the I-2 an essential instrument for producing unique images.
Built-In Manual Controls
Historically associated with artists, independent innovators, and aftermarket vendors, integrated manual controls have now been officially introduced in a Polaroid camera. Mastery over light is essential to the art of photography, and the I-2 camera has been engineered to provide this mastery, featuring adjustable shutter speeds ranging from 1/250 to 30 seconds and aperture settings from f/8 to f/64. Additionally, a bulb mode is included for exposures exceeding 30 seconds. This level of precision enables the exploration of bokeh effects, selective lighting methods, motion blur, and various other techniques.
In addition to the comprehensive manual mode, the camera is equipped with a fully automatic mode, as well as aperture and shutter priority modes. It also includes a self-timer and a multiple exposure mode, enabling the combination of two to four images on a single sheet of Polaroid film. These six modes provide photographers with a wide range of creative options inherent in analog photography.
The camera's settings and light meter readings are displayed on both the external AMOLED screen and the viewfinder-integrated displays. For exposure adjustment, the camera employs a center-weighted single zone metering system that encompasses 60% of the optical viewfinder's field of view. This exposure can be modified by up to two stops in either direction in 1/3 increments through the EV Switch located at the base of the lens. Additionally, the built-in flash allows for increased illumination, while the 2.5mm external flash sync port provides extensive creative possibilities for off-camera lighting solutions.
Polaroid's Sharpest-Ever Lens
The I-2 is equipped with Polaroid's most sophisticated lens system to date, featuring a continuous autofocus mechanism that incorporates a three-lens configuration and a LiDAR ranging sensor to accurately focus on subjects, ensuring exceptionally sharp images. The autofocus frame, centrally located in the viewfinder and driven by a stepper motor, measures and displays the distance from the focal plane to the subject, which can be locked alongside exposure settings by half-pressing the shutter button. The 98mm, f/8 lens is treated with an antireflective coating that minimizes glare and ghosting, while its focal length and maximum aperture work together to enhance depth of field, yielding superior bokeh effects and highlighting the camera's strengths in portrait photography. Additionally, the lens is designed with a built-in 49mm filter thread mount, allowing for the attachment of screw-on lens filters, marking another innovative feature for Polaroid cameras.
Body Design and Connectivity
The I-2's elegant black design harmonizes the legacy of Polaroid camera craftsmanship with the innovative features of the new model, notably achieving a reduced shoulder size to better accommodate the enhanced lens. The upgraded optical viewfinder is larger and more luminous than previous iterations, providing all essential exposure details. Weighing just under 20 ounces, the combination of stainless steel and aluminum alloy offers a substantial feel without excessive weight. Additionally, the optional vegan leather shoulder holster, shoulder strap, and carrying case serve as practical branded accessories for both travel and daily use. The camera's premium construction, usability, and photographic experience underscore Polaroid's commitment to delivering exceptional quality.
Expanded Capabilities in the Polaroid App
Utilizing the I-2 in conjunction with the Polaroid application provides an opportunity to delve deeper into the camera's advanced features. The application presents all manual controls of the camera in a clear and accessible manner, allowing users to manage them effectively. Additionally, it serves as a shutter release mechanism. The app enhances functionality by offering a self-timer across all modes and granting complete manual control over the multi-exposure feature. Furthermore, by connecting to the camera through Bluetooth, the application facilitates firmware updates.
