Ricoh GR III Diary Edition Digital Camera
The highly anticipated addition to the esteemed series of compact, high-speed cameras, the Ricoh GR III Diary Edition Digital Camera, upholds its reputation as a portable powerhouse, delivering exceptional image quality, rapid responsiveness, and remarkable portability. This model features an advanced imaging system, incorporating a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and the GR Engine 6, which together achieve smooth tonal gradation, vibrant colors, and high sensitivity ranging from ISO 100 to 102400. It is capable of producing high-resolution 14-bit DNG images as well as Full HD video. Accompanying the sensor is an 18.3mm, f/2.8 prime lens, equivalent to a 35mm focal length of 28mm. Notably, for the first time in the GR series, a 3-axis Shake Reduction System is included to mitigate the effects of camera shake, enabling sharper handheld images even at slower shutter speeds.
In terms of design, the GR III maintains its familiar compact form while featuring a revamped control layout that enhances grip comfort and ensures easy access to essential controls. A 3.0" LCD with a resolution of 1.037 million dots is utilized for composing images, reviewing shots, and navigating menus, with its touchscreen functionality providing intuitive operation and Touch AF capabilities. Furthermore, integrated Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi allow for seamless pairing with mobile devices, facilitating quick and wireless file transfers to smartphones or tablets.
Diary Edition
The camera body is characterized by a textured metallic surface, designed to embody reliability and quality. This textured finish not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also provides a secure grip. The elegant appearance elevates the camera beyond a mere imaging device, while the warm hue allows it to seamlessly integrate into everyday life. The Negative-Film Image Control Mode modifies color tones to emulate the characteristics of negative film, producing a nostalgic effect reminiscent of photos developed from such film. The Power-Off Info Display conveniently presents the current firmware version alongside the total number of shots taken in a single day. Enhanced smartphone integration now includes a power-off feature via ImageSync, enabling users to check and transfer images as well as power down the camera while it remains in a bag. Additionally, the original shut-down screen showcases an embossed product logo set against a fabric-like textured background, reflecting the color of the camera body finish.
24.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor and GR Engine 6
The updated design incorporates a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor, complemented by the new GR Engine 6, enabling the capture of high-resolution 14-bit DNG or JPEG images characterized by remarkable tonality, authentic color reproduction, and exceptional sensitivity ranging from ISO 100 to 102400. Alongside full-resolution wide-angle photographs, the device offers two practical crop modes—15MP at 35mm and 7MP at 50mm—allowing users to emulate the appearance of utilizing longer focal lengths.
Beyond still photography, the GR III is also equipped to record Full HD 1080 video at frame rates of 60p, 30p, and 24p.
Prime Wide-Angle Lens
The fixed prime 18.3mm lens provides a convenient 28mm equivalent wide-angle perspective, enhanced by a bright f/2.8 maximum aperture that accommodates various lighting environments. Its optical design features six elements arranged in four groups, including two aspherical elements that minimize spherical aberrations and distortion, thereby enhancing sharpness and color accuracy. The lens offers two focusing modes suitable for general photography, ranging from 3.9 inches to infinity, while a specialized macro mode allows for close-up work within a 2.4 to 4.7-inch range. An internal two-stop effective neutral density (ND 0.6) filter is included, enabling slower shutter speeds or wider aperture usage. The lens is equipped with a nine-blade diaphragm, contributing to a pleasing bokeh effect. Furthermore, the redesigned lens structure improves contrast and is 1.5mm thinner than the previous GR/GR II digital camera models.
Shake Reduction System
For the first time in a GR camera, a 3-axis Shake Reduction System has been introduced to significantly reduce the effects of camera shake, thereby enhancing the sharpness of handheld images taken at slower shutter speeds. This Shake Reduction System has been specifically optimized for the integrated 28mm-equivalent lens, resulting in a more compact and efficient design. Furthermore, the SR unit provides additional features such as moiré reduction and dust removal.
Body Design
- The hallmark feature of the GR-series is its compact, pocketable size while still retaining a large image sensor and a bright prime lens.
- Integrated 3.0" 1.037m-dot LCD features a capacitive touchscreen design for intuitive, familiar operation during shooting, playback, and menu navigation.
- The rear layout of the camera has been completely redesigned and prioritizes a larger, more comfortable thumb grip along with easily accessible physical dials. Additionally, the ADJ lever, FN button, and Touch AF operations can be programmed to handle specific assignable functions for more personalized control.
- Start-up time has been reduced to 0.8 sec and Hybrid AF performance has been quickened for more seamless operation.
- Integrated Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi afford wireless connectivity between the camera and a paired mobile device, and allow you to embed location info within your files as well as transfer files to your mobile device, even when the camera is turned off.
- Included DB-110 rechargeable lithium-ion battery offers approximately 200 shots per charge.
- USB Type-C port allows you to transfer files or recharge the battery in-camera.
