Monitoring HD video signals in outdoor environments can present challenges; however, the SmallHD 703 UltraBright On-Camera Monitor effectively addresses these issues with its impressive 2200 cd/m² backlight. The 7-inch LCD, featuring a resolution of 1920 x 1080, delivers a crisp image that is particularly beneficial for focus pulling and image analysis both on set and in the field. Additionally, the high-brightness panel enables the monitor to preview HDR content, enhancing the display's dynamic range and allowing for a broader spectrum of brightness in the visuals.

The monitor's unibody aluminum construction ensures durability while remaining lightweight, and it also functions as a heatsink for the internal components. The LCD panel is safeguarded by a layer of optically-bonded Gorilla Glass, recognized for its clarity and resilience. This optical bonding technique prevents blacks from appearing washed out and minimizes glare from reflections.

Located on the sides of the display are the SDI and HDMI input/output ports. The inclusion of dual SDI ports facilitates A/B viewing of two distinct SDI signals, with the secondary port also capable of being configured as an output to transmit an SDI signal to another monitor, switcher, or wireless device. The monitor's comprehensive functionality is accessible through the PageBuilder OS, which offers advanced features within a user-friendly graphical interface.

PageBuilder OS

PageBuilder OS offers a user-friendly graphical interface that provides immediate access to the comprehensive features of the 703 UltraBright. Instead of navigating through complex menus, this interface enables users to selectively utilize monitoring tools, including waveform, vectorscope, multiview, LUTs, and focusing aids, across various "pages." Users can effortlessly switch between these pages using the joystick, while the front panel buttons allow for the activation and deactivation of monitoring tools for each individual page.

ColorFlow 3D LUT Processing

To ensure consistency in your images from production to post-production, ColorFlow enables the importation of 3D LUTs and provides a side-by-side display of the processed image alongside the original. This feature allows for accurate exposure assessment while visualizing the camera's recording. The side-by-side preview can also be utilized in conjunction with the HDR preview function. Additionally, separate LUT-processed images can be transmitted downstream via SDI and HDMI, allowing the 703 UltraBright to display either a log image or a LUT-processed image, while directors or clients connected to the outputs can view images processed with an alternative LUT. Furthermore, an image capture function allows for the saving of a still frame from the incoming video stream onto an SD card, along with the recorded 3D LUT for reference in post-production.

On-Set Problem Solving

PageBuilder OS has a dedicated "Output Preview" page which allows you to apply LUTs and other image adjustments specific to the output signal from the monitor. Whether you have your camera connected to the HDMI or SDI input on the 703 UltraBright, you are not limited by that protocol; the 703 UltraBright cross-converts to ensure compatibility with downstream hardware.

HD Scopes

Fill the screen with up to three simultaneous scopes, including waveform, vectorscope, and histogram, while still being able to observe the camera feed.

Exposure Tools

Exposure Assist supports both ARRI and Spectrum based false color, with built in IRE guides for reference. Utilize 2x Zebra to warn you when reaching a brightness level of your choosing. This is great for matching exposure across shots and cameras.

Customizable Focus Assist and Peaking Tools

As recording resolutions advance, the significance of precise focusing also escalates. Focus Assist allows you to emphasize the areas that are in focus using a vivid color. These highlights are readily observable in real-time, facilitating swift focus verification. Additionally, Focus Peaking enhances the image sharpness, providing a more nuanced confirmation of focus without relying on bright outlines. The color and intensity of these features can be customized to suit your preferences.

Versatile Frame Guides

Select standard markers and safety areas that can be overlaid on the display as lines or matte overlays, with custom opacity level and colors. Default aspect ratios include 4:3, 1.85, 2.39:1, 16:9, and Custom (user selectable).

Power Options

Separately available DV, V-Mount, or Gold Mount battery plates can be attached to the rear of the display. A mounted battery can power the monitor, as well as attached accessories, through the 12V LEMO pass-through connection.
