It boasts a higher resolution 61MP BSI CMOS sensor, enhanced autofocus and video capabilities, a refreshed body design, a larger battery, and retains the cherished ZEISS Sonnar T* 35mm f/2 prime lens from previous iterations. This high-performance companion camera seamlessly combines exceptional image quality with a remarkably portable form factor.
Full-Frame Sensor, BIONZ XR, AI Processing Unit
61MP Exmor R BSI Sensor & BIONZ XR Processing
Utilizing the established high-resolution sensor from the a7R V and a7CR models, the RX1R III incorporates the full-frame 61MP Exmor R BSI chip, complemented by BIONZ XR processing. This combination delivers remarkable resolution, exceptional clarity, minimal noise, and an extensive 15-stop dynamic range. The design of the sensor enhances image quality significantly, while a copper wiring layer substantially boosts data transmission speed, enabling the capture of 14-bit, 61MP still images with a native sensitivity range spanning ISO 100 to 32000.
Accompanying the sensor is the proficient BIONZ XR processor, which provides up to 8 times the processing performance of earlier models. This advancement facilitates quicker overall performance, outstanding image quality with broad sensitivity and dynamic ranges, and smoother processing capable of managing numerous AI tasks and intelligent autofocus in conjunction with imaging operations. Furthermore, this processing architecture minimizes rolling shutter effects and other motion distortions, ensuring clean rendering of dynamic subjects.
AI Processing Unit and Autofocus
Through specialized processing, the autofocus of the RX1R III is significantly enhanced by advanced subject tracking and recognition features, in addition to the dependable hybrid AF system that Alpha cameras are recognized for. The Real-time Recognition AF operates with seven distinct selectable target types:
- The human tracking system monitors the positions of the body and head to create precise portraits.
Additionally, the real-time Eye AF functionality has seen a 60% enhancement due to the advancements in human pose estimation capabilities.
- The Animal, Bird, and Animal/Bird modes have achieved a 40% increase in accuracy for tracking and identifying various types of animals. This recognition encompasses dogs, cats, birds, and additional species, with the capability to concentrate on the eyes and identify the bodies and heads of these animals.
- Insect recognition offers even finer performance with the ability to detect the head or entire insect subject.
- The recognition of cars, trains, and airplanes indicates that the camera is capable of identifying the front section of a train, the nose of an airplane, or swiftly recognizing the entirety of a rapidly moving object.
- The advantages of real-time tracking are enhanced by AI-driven subject recognition, which is effective for monitoring moving subjects, thus making it especially appropriate for sports and action scenarios. Furthermore, human pose estimation enables the camera to identify multiple individuals and keep its focus on the intended subject; even when another person moves in front, the camera continues to concentrate on the primary individual.
Advanced Fast Hybrid AF
With sensitivity as low as -4 EV, a Fast Hybrid AF system uses a dense 693 phase-detection point grid to focus quickly and accurately in a range of lighting conditions, covering 79% of the full-frame image area or 100% of the APS-C cropped area. All recording modes can utilize this focusing system, which is advantageous for both still and video applications. Even when using AF, switching focus to a different subject is made easier with full-time DMF (Direct Manual Focus), which allows you to use the lens's focus ring for manual focus control at any time.
Accurate Exposure and Color
The use of AI-driven algorithms, such as Human Pose Estimation, enables particularly precise metering and white balance by identifying skin regions, which allows for better exposure balance during portrait photography. This automatic exposure technique is roughly 20% more dependable, even in challenging lighting conditions like backlighting or direct sunlight, and even when the subject is not oriented towards the camera. Additionally, deep learning technology, in conjunction with external visible light and infrared sensors, plays a significant role in enhancing color accuracy and the processing of automatic white balance.
Step Crop Modes
Designed for a high-resolution fixed lens camera, the RX1R III features Step Crop modes that replicate the field of view of lenses apart from the integrated 35mm lens. By default, the C1 button is assigned to switch between these modes, allowing you to alternate between 50mm (29MP) and 70mm (15MP) settings for more compact in-camera compositions.
Creative Looks
In addition to being suitable for a fixed lens, portable camera, a range of new Creative Look settings has been introduced to provide a distinctive aesthetic to images captured directly from the camera. There are now a total of 12 presets available, which include the traditional filmic FL setting; a new nostalgic FL2 film mode; a more contrasty and polished FL3 slide film-inspired appearance, and IN, which evokes the feel of instant film.
ZEISS Sonnar T* 35mm f/2 Lens
- Boasting the same iconic lens as its predecessor, the RX1R III is equipped with the renowned ZEISS Sonnar T* 35mm f/2 prime lens—a quick wide-angle prime that is ideal for daily photography requirements.
- The bright f/2 maximum aperture is well-suited for various lighting conditions and provides significant control over depth of field, allowing for the emphasis of subjects through selective focus.
- The optical design incorporates a series of aspherical elements that produce images with a high level of sharpness and precision.
- The nine-blade diaphragm enhances the quality of bokeh, resulting in a pleasing aesthetic.
- A dedicated macro position on the lens barrel facilitates the focusing of close-up subjects within a range of 7.9" to 11.8"; when switched to the normal position, the lens can focus down to 11.8".
- The leaf shutter design permits flash synchronization at all mechanical shutter speeds, reaching up to 1/4000 sec.
Portable Profile
- Designed to be a portable camera, significant emphasis has been placed on minimizing its size while ensuring that quality is not compromised.
- Measuring 4.4 x 2.6 x 2.9 inches and weighing 1.1 pounds, the camera is compact enough to fit into a coat pocket for daily use.
