The Sony ECM-W5 represents a dual-channel wireless microphone solution engineered specifically for Sony cameras equipped with a compatible Multi Interface Shoe featuring digital audio capabilities. This system serves professional applications including interviews, video production, live streaming, and content creation. The receiver unit mounts directly onto the camera's MI Shoe, enabling cable-free digital audio capture while simultaneously drawing power from the camera itself. Compatible camera models possess the capability to record 32-bit float audio directly into the video file format, thereby streamlining the post-production editing process and simplifying overall file management workflows. The comprehensive package encompasses two microphone and transmitter units, one receiver unit, a dedicated charging case, and a USB-C power adapter. The system provides integrated onboard backup recording functionality, wireless headphone monitoring capabilities, and timecode synchronization features. Beyond its primary application with Sony cameras, this adaptable system demonstrates compatibility with computers, mobile devices, and alternative camera systems that lack a Sony MI Shoe interface.

Digital Audio Integration with Sony Cameras

By connecting to a compatible Sony camera via the MI Shoe interface, the ECM-W5 transmits high-fidelity digital audio at sampling rates of up to 96 kHz with 24-bit depth or alternatively at 48 kHz with 32-bit float precision. When used with supported camera models, 32-bit float audio is captured and embedded directly as an integrated audio track within the video file itself, thereby eliminating the necessity to handle and align a separate audio file independently. Subtle vocal passages and abrupt volume spikes can be refined during the postproduction phase, thereby minimizing the requirement for continuous gain management throughout the recording session.

The input gain control provides both an automatic mode designed to mitigate clipping and distortion, as well as a manual mode offering adjustable gain ranging from -12 to +12 dB—a capability that remains available even when recording in 32-bit float format. The noise reduction and low-frequency attenuation features can be activated or deactivated through the camera's menu system.

Reliable Wireless Audio and Flexible Monitoring

The ECM-W5 delivers wireless transmission with low-latency across distances reaching approximately 1640 feet under direct line-of-sight conditions. Its advanced wireless architecture incorporates Bluetooth frequency-hopping technology to sustain reliable connections and reduce signal interruptions, particularly in electromagnetically congested environments. Compatible Sony Bluetooth LE Audio headphones may be connected to the receiver unit to enable wireless audio monitoring without cable constraints. The receiver unit possesses the capability to acquire audio signals from microphones integrated into compatible Sony wireless headphone models, facilitating streamlined content creation workflows for vlogging applications. When utilized with a compatible microphone, binaural recording functionality enables the capture of environmental audio with enhanced spatial dimensionality and acoustic perspective.

Onboard Backup and Four-Channel Expansion

Each microphone and transmitter unit incorporates 64GB of integrated storage capacity, enabling autonomous recording functionality and on-device backup capabilities. When paired with compatible Sony camera systems, simultaneous WAV file recording is supported, preserving a 32-bit float audio stream independently from the accompanying video content. Recordings stored internally can be transferred to a personal computer via USB-C connectivity, whether accessed directly through the microphone interface or by utilizing the charging case as a conduit.

Up to two additional ECM-W5T transmitters may be incorporated into the system, available separately, facilitating the simultaneous capture of four distinct speakers on isolated audio tracks within a compatible camera device. The microphone's integrated recording initiation and termination controls deliver operational convenience during interview sessions and comparable production scenarios.

Lavalier Inputs and Versatile Mounting

Both the transmitter and receiver feature a mono 3.5mm external microphone input designed to accommodate lavalier microphones, including the optional Sony ECM-L1 model. The transmitter incorporates a locking TRS jack that effectively prevents unintended cable disconnection. The device offers both clip and magnet attachment mechanisms, enabling versatile positioning on garments or other surfaces. Its understated design makes it well-suited for on-camera applications, while the vertical orientation facilitates comfortable handheld operation for reporting and live streaming purposes. Beyond Sony camera systems, the microphone and receiver are compatible with a range of smartphones and personal computers for expanded recording capabilities. The supplied USB-C adapter facilitates wireless receiver connectivity to devices that support USB Audio Class 2.0 standards, including support for 32-bit float recording functionality.

Timecode, Controls, and Camera-Linked Power

Timecode output facilitates the synchronization of footage during postproduction workflows. When operating in USB SYNC mode, a USB-C cable establishes a connection between the receiver and a compatible Sony camera, enabling synchronization with timecode information embedded within video metadata, thereby facilitating multi-camera production scenarios.

Opening the charging case transitions the receiver into standby mode, while extracting the units initiates their operational state. The receiver is equipped with a high-contrast AMOLED touchscreen display and an integrated control wheel or button mechanism for modifying configuration settings. When preconfigured appropriately, camera-linked power delivered through the MI Shoe simultaneously activates the receiver and microphone units.

A compatible camera supplies power to the shoe-mounted receiver throughout extended recording sessions. Both the microphones and standalone receiver deliver up to seven hours of uninterrupted operation following a complete charge cycle. When the receiver draws power from the camera, charging the microphones via the case prolongs total operational duration to approximately eleven hours. Status indicators illuminate to convey power state, recording activity, and connection status. The primary unit's plastic composition incorporates recycled materials representing more than forty-one percent of its total plastic weight.
