Sony ECM-W5R Wireless Microphone Receiver
The Sony ECM-W5 Receiver has been engineered specifically for Sony cameras equipped with a compatible Multi Interface Shoe that incorporates an integrated digital audio interface. This device attaches directly to the camera, enabling cable-free digital audio recording while simultaneously drawing power from the camera itself. When paired with ECM-W5T microphone and transmitter units, which are sold independently, the receiver facilitates high-resolution audio capture, enables four-channel simultaneous recording within the camera, provides wireless monitoring capabilities for headphones, and facilitates timecode alignment across multiple devices. Compatible Sony camera models possess the capability to record 32-bit float audio directly into video files, thereby streamlining the post-production editing process and simplifying overall file management workflows. Beyond its primary application, the adaptable receiver demonstrates compatibility with personal computers, mobile devices, and camera systems that do not feature a Sony Multi Interface Shoe configuration.
Digital Audio Integration with Select Sony Cameras
The receiver transmits digital audio through a compatible camera's MI Shoe interface, supporting transmission rates of up to 96 kHz/24-bit or 48 kHz/32-bit float. On cameras that support this functionality, 32-bit float audio is embedded directly as an integrated audio track within the video file, thereby eliminating the requirement to manage and synchronize independent audio recordings. Quiet vocal passages and abrupt volume spikes can be refined during the postproduction phase, thereby minimizing the necessity for continuous gain management throughout the recording session. Compatible cameras further facilitate concurrent WAV recording to preserve an audio source independently from the video file.
The input gain mechanism provides both automatic adjustment capabilities to mitigate clipping and distortion, as well as manual control ranging from -12 to +12 dB, which remains available even during 32-bit float recording operations. The noise-cut and low-cut filtering functions can be activated or deactivated through the device menu.
Four-Channel Recording and Stable Transmission
The receiver is capable of accommodating up to four simultaneous in-camera audio channels when utilized with ECM-W5T microphone and transmitter units. The ability to record individual speakers on distinct tracks facilitates more efficient editing of interviews and conversational content. The system employs low-latency wireless transmission technology that functions effectively at ranges extending to approximately 1640 feet under direct line-of-sight conditions. The implementation of Bluetooth hopping technology combined with an optimized wireless architecture ensures the maintenance of dependable connections while reducing signal interruptions, particularly in environments characterized by substantial radio frequency congestion.
Wireless Monitoring and External Microphone Input
Connect compatible Sony Bluetooth LE Audio headphones for cable-free audio monitoring during shooting. The receiver can also capture audio from the microphone on compatible Sony wireless headphones and record it in-camera. With a compatible microphone, binaural recording supports ambient sound capture with a sense of spatial depth.
A mono 3.5mm external microphone input accepts lavaliers such as the Sony ECM-L1, available separately.
Timecode Synchronization and Flexible Connectivity
Timecode output helps align footage quickly and accurately in postproduction. In USB SYNC mode, a USB-C cable connects the receiver to a compatible Sony camera to synchronize with timecode stored as video metadata, supporting multi-camera workflows.
The receiver also supports recording to compatible smartphones and PCs. Connection to devices supporting USB Audio Class 2.0 enables USB audio recording, including 32-bit float.
Touchscreen Controls and Camera-Supplied Power
A high-contrast AMOLED touchscreen provides access to menu settings, complemented by a control wheel/button. LEDs indicate power, recording, and link status.
A compatible camera powers the receiver through the MI Shoe for extended shooting. When configured in advance, camera-linked power also switches on the receiver and paired microphones. For standalone operation, the receiver provides up to seven hours of continuous use on a full charge.
