Demonstrating the ability for speed, resolution, and video features to harmoniously coexist, the Sony a7R IIIA stands out as a versatile and high-performance camera, distinguished not only by its impressive resolution but also by its multimedia adaptability.
42.4 MP Exmor R BSI CMOS Sensor and BIONZ X Image Processor
The full-frame 42.4-megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensor, featuring a back-illuminated design, collaborates with the BIONZ X image processor to deliver high-resolution images and videos while effectively reducing noise and enhancing processing speed. This sensor architecture incorporates a gapless on-chip lens design and an anti-reflection coating, while the removal of the optical low-pass filter further optimizes light capture and detail enhancement. Additionally, the integration of a copper wiring layer significantly boosts data transmission rates, facilitating the creation of 14-bit, high-resolution 42.4-megapixel images with a native sensitivity range of ISO 100-32000, which can be extended to ISO 50-102400. The system also supports internal UHD 4K video recording with an extensive dynamic range, utilizing the full width of the full-frame sensor. The BIONZ X processor, in conjunction with a high-speed front-end LSI, enables quicker processing times and the capability to achieve an impressive 15-stop dynamic range at lower sensitivity settings.
This combination of sensor and processor allows for rapid continuous shooting at a rate of up to 10 frames per second at full resolution, accommodating up to 76 consecutive frames, while maintaining full-time autofocus and auto-exposure with both mechanical and electronic shutters. In live view mode, a continuous shooting speed of up to 8 frames per second is also achievable.
Fast Hybrid AF System
The advanced 4D FOCUS system now utilizes a blend of 399 phase-detection points, encompassing around 68% of the frame, in conjunction with 425 contrast-detection zones. This configuration ensures dependable and rapid autofocus and subject tracking capabilities. The Fast Hybrid AF System now delivers double the focusing speed and enhanced tracking reliability in comparison to earlier a7R models, along with an improved low-light focusing response down to -3 EV.
Lock-on AF ensures that focus remains on moving subjects by utilizing a customizable frame positioned over the intended subject. Expand Flexible Spot utilizes adjacent focus points to maintain focus on moving subjects, even if the initially selected point loses its focus. Eye AF is designed to focus on the eyes of recognized human subjects for portrait photography and is available in both AF-S and AF-C modes for still images and video. Additionally, Eye AF can be employed for photographing animals in any focusing mode when capturing stills. The Focus Magnifier function is available for achieving precise focus on intricate details of the subject. The rear touchscreen facilitates Touch Focus control, while the Touchpad Focus Control mode allows intuitive use of the rear screen without removing the eye from the viewfinder. For enhanced focus control tailored to either vertical or horizontal shooting orientations, the AF area can be adjusted to better align with the subject. Furthermore, AF tracking sensitivity can be fine-tuned in five increments to correspond with the subject's movement. Frequently utilized focus point configurations can be saved and quickly accessed via a custom button, enabling rapid transitions between focus settings.
5-Axis SteadyShot INSIDE Image Stabilization
The a7R IIIA features an advanced 5.5-stop effective 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE image stabilization system, designed to counteract five distinct types of camera shake that may occur during handheld photography and videography. This capability enables users to confidently utilize any lens, including adapted ones, for precise imaging without the risk of blur caused by camera movement.
For longer focal lengths, the stabilization system effectively addresses pitch and yaw adjustments. In contrast, macro and high-magnification photography will gain from the added horizontal and vertical shift compensation. Additionally, all shooting techniques will benefit from the roll compensation feature. Notably, all five axes of stabilization remain operational at all times, even when employing third-party lenses and adapters or lenses equipped with built-in optical stabilization.
UHD 4K Video Recording in XAVC S Format
The device supports internal recording of UHD 4K video at various frame rates, reaching up to 30 fps, while utilizing the full sensor width with 8-bit 4:2:0 color sampling through the 100Mbps XAVC S codec. Additionally, oversampled 4K recording is achievable, employing a 5K capture area with a Super 35 crop to enhance detail. This method ensures full pixel readout without pixel binning, resulting in superior image quality with minimized moiré and aliasing effects. Furthermore, Full HD 1080p recording is available at frame rates of up to 120 fps, allowing for high-speed recording that facilitates 4x and 5x Slow & Quick Motion (S&Q) movie recording, with frame rates adjustable to either 30p or 24p. Beyond high-resolution internal recording, the uncompressed HDMI output permits the connection of an optional external recorder for pristine 4K recording with 4:2:2 sampling. Moreover, 4K video recording provides the capability to capture 8MP still images during playback by extracting a frame from the video and saving it as a distinct file.
S-Log3 and HLG Color Control
The inclusion of HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) support enables the capture of a broad color spectrum, facilitating the creation of HDR-ready content directly from the camera. Additionally, S-Log3 is offered, allowing for the generation of a dynamic range exceeding 14 stops, which enhances grading flexibility in the shadow to mid-tone areas of the image.
Viewfinder and LCD Screen
The camera is equipped with an enhanced Quad-VGA OLED Tru-Finder electronic viewfinder (EVF), boasting a resolution of 3.69 million dots, which ensures bright and detailed viewing. Users can select between Standard and High-quality settings based on the shooting conditions to enhance their viewing experience. Additionally, a 3.0-inch rear LCD with a resolution of 2.36 million dots is provided, featuring a touch panel for intuitive operation and focus control. This screen is capable of tilting upward by 107 degrees and downward by 41 degrees, facilitating shooting from both high and low angles.
Reliable Construction
The magnesium alloy chassis provides exceptional rigidity, durability, and stability while maintaining a lightweight profile. Enhancements have been made to the lens mount to offer better support for heavier lenses, and the grip has been reinforced to ensure a more comfortable handling experience. A robust shutter unit features a coreless motor and brake system designed to minimize vibrations, thereby improving control over shutter shock and extending its operational lifespan to approximately 500,000 actuations. Weather-sealing technology has been implemented to protect against dust and moisture, ensuring reliable performance in challenging weather conditions. Utilizing the same NP-FZ100 battery as the a9, the a7R IIIA boasts an improved battery life, capable of approximately 530 shots per charge with the electronic viewfinder or 640 shots with the rear LCD. The presence of dual SD memory card slots facilitates versatile file saving and management, allowing for the partitioning of raw and JPEG files or overflow recording. Notably, one of the card slots is compatible with UHS-II memory cards.
