61MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor

This full-frame 61MP Exmor R CMOS sensor, characterized by its back-illuminated design, delivers an exceptional combination of high resolution, clarity, minimal noise, and an extensive 15-stop dynamic range. The architecture of the sensor enhances image quality significantly, while the incorporation of a copper wiring layer substantially boosts data transmission speeds, enabling the capture of 14-bit, high-resolution 61MP images. Its native sensitivity range spans ISO 100 to ISO 32000, with the capability to extend from ISO 50 to ISO 102400.

Improved Processing Engine

The newly developed BIONZ XR processing engine delivers up to eight times the processing performance of its predecessors, facilitating enhanced overall efficiency, remarkable image quality with extensive sensitivity and dynamic ranges, and smoother processing capable of managing numerous AI tasks and intelligent autofocus alongside imaging functions. This advanced processing system also mitigates rolling shutter effects and other motion distortions, ensuring clear rendering of moving subjects.

Regarding shooting capabilities, the combination of the sensor and processor allows for shooting at speeds of up to 10 frames per second at full resolution using a mechanical shutter, enabling the capture of up to 583 consecutive compressed raw frames with continuous autofocus and auto-exposure. When shooting in JPEG format, it is possible to record over 1,000 frames in a single burst.

Updated 5-Axis Image Stabilization

The in-body image stabilization system has been enhanced for the a7R V, now providing compensation for up to 8 stops of camera shake. This advanced 5-axis stabilization system integrates a high-performance gyro sensor with a refined algorithm, resulting in superior shake control and enhanced interaction between the camera body and lens. Furthermore, for video applications, an Active IS mode has been introduced, delivering additional stabilization techniques for exceptionally smooth footage directly from the camera. This digital stabilization system has also been upgraded with a new algorithm, ensuring optimal stabilization performance when used with specific OSS-enabled lenses.

Pixel Shift Multi Shooting

This distinctive compositing mode enables the attainment of a resolution that surpasses the capabilities of the 61MP sensor. By collaborating with the sensor-shift image stabilization, this mode shifts the sensor while capturing 16 consecutive images, resulting in approximately 240.8MP of data. This process enhances color accuracy and detail beyond what a single exposure can provide, yielding an impressive image size of 19,008 x 12,672 pixels. Subsequently, these files can be combined in post-production utilizing the Sony Imaging software suite.

Accurate Exposure and Color

The newly developed auto-exposure algorithm is capable of identifying skin regions on faces, thereby enhancing the accuracy of exposure balancing in portrait photography. This auto-exposure technique demonstrates an improvement in reliability by approximately 20%, even under challenging lighting conditions such as backlighting or direct sunlight, and when the subject is not oriented directly towards the camera. AI Processing Unit

The a7R V's autofocus system is significantly enhanced through dedicated processing, which incorporates advanced subject tracking and recognition features, in addition to the dependable hybrid AF system that is characteristic of Alpha cameras. The Real-time Recognition AF operates with seven distinct selectable target types.

Human pose estimation

The α7R V employs subject form data to detect movement, resulting in an approximate 60% enhancement in the recognition of human eyes. By utilizing learned human shapes and postures, human pose estimation accurately identifies not only the eyes but also the positions of the body and head. This capability allows for the effective locking onto and tracking of a subject who may be facing away from the camera or wearing a mask, among other scenarios.

Real-time Eye AF for Animals

The Animal, Bird, and Animal/Bird modes have been enhanced to achieve a 40% increase in accuracy for tracking and identifying various species. This improved recognition encompasses dogs, cats, birds, and additional animals, with a refined capability to focus on the eyes and accurately identify the bodies and heads of these creatures.

Insect Recognition

Insect recognition provides enhanced capabilities, allowing for the identification of either the head or the complete insect subject.

Car/Train and Airplane recognition

The capability of recognizing cars, trains, and airplanes indicates that the camera can identify the front section of a train, the nose of an airplane, or efficiently detect the entirety of a rapidly moving object.

Real-time Tracking

The advantages of real-time tracking are enhanced by AI-driven subject recognition, which effectively follows moving subjects, rendering it especially advantageous for sports and action scenarios. Additionally, human pose estimation enables the camera to differentiate between several individuals, ensuring that it remains focused on the intended subject; even when another person obstructs the view, the camera continues to prioritize the primary individual.

Advanced Fast Hybrid AF

 

 

The Fast Hybrid AF system, which covers 79% of the full-frame image area and 100% of the APS-C cropped area, features a comprehensive grid of 693 phase-detection points. This configuration allows for rapid and accurate focusing across various lighting conditions, with sensitivity reaching as low as -4 EV. This focusing mechanism is accessible in all recording modes, enhancing both video and still photography applications. The full-time Direct Manual Focus (DMF) function permits the use of the lens's focus ring for manual adjustments at any moment, facilitating a seamless transition to different subjects even while utilizing autofocus. For capturing moving subjects, this AF system is capable of maintaining focus at continuous shooting speeds of up to 10 frames per second, ensuring consistent autofocus tracking throughout each frame. Additionally, in-camera Focus Bracketing is supported, allowing for the capture of up to 299 frames with incrementally adjusted focus points, which can be utilized in post-production to create composite images with an extended depth of field.

AF During Video Recording

Real-time Eye AF is fully operational during video recording, enabling the detection and tracking of human, animal, and bird eyes while filming. The Focus Map feature provides a distinctive method for visualizing depth of field, functioning similarly to peaking by using a colorful overlay to indicate which areas of the scene are in front of or behind the selected focus point, based on the aperture setting. The AF Assist feature, inherited from the FX6 digital cine camera, allows for a seamless transition to manual focus control, facilitating adjustments to the focus position while utilizing autofocus. This feature offers a rapid means to shift selective focus among various subjects within a scene during recording. Additionally, Focus Breathing compensation serves as a specialized solution to address the performance of certain lenses when adjusting focus. This feature automatically smooths focus transitions and preserves a consistent field of view when altering the focus position during a shot, slightly cropping into the image to correct for any detected compositional shifts that occur during focusing.

8K 24p Support

 

 

Utilizing the advanced high-resolution sensor and rapid processing capabilities, it is feasible to record UHD 8K at 24p and UHD 4K at 60p in XAVC HS 10-bit format. This is achieved by employing the entire width of the sensor, ensuring complete pixel readout for exceptional sharpness and realism.

4K 60p Support

 

 

When utilizing a Super 35 crop, it is feasible to achieve full pixel readout recording at resolutions reaching UHD 4K with frame rates of up to 30p. Additionally, 6.2K oversampling can be employed to enhance sharpness and detail. Internal recording with 10-bit 4:2:2 sampling is achievable at 4K 60p in both XAVC HS and XAVC S-I formats. Furthermore, when recording externally through the full-size HDMI A port, a 16-bit raw output can be utilized, providing superior tonal reproduction and increased flexibility in post-production. Raw output is supported at resolutions up to 4K 60p, and simultaneous internal 4K recording is also possible.

Recording Flexibility

The a7R V utilizes two distinct codecs tailored for various workflows: XAVC HS, which employs HEVC/H.265 encoding to preserve greater detail at reduced bitrates, and XAVC S-I, an intraframe codec designed for reliable performance and quality at elevated bitrates. When recording in Full HD, the high-speed capability of 120 fps allows for slow-motion movie recording at 4x and 5x, with playback frame rates adjustable to either 30p or 24p. Additionally, the absence of a recording time limit facilitates unlimited clip lengths, while the camera's enhanced physical design incorporates an improved heat-dissipating structure to support extended recording durations.

Advanced Color Control

S-Cinetone is designed to provide unique color profiles and a vibrant skin tone representation that aligns with the FX9, FX6, a1, and a7S III cameras, drawing on technology from the professional Cinema Line, including the VENICE model. This color profile is characterized by its natural mid-tones, gentle hues, and particularly well-managed highlights. It offers a wide range of customizable options for color and gamma adjustments, allowing users to modify gamma, black levels, knee settings, color levels, and more. Additionally, users can utilize the S-Log2 Gamma Curve, which is also present in high-end Sony Cinema cameras, enabling the capture of up to 1300% more dynamic range in the video signal compared to traditional REC709, thus enhancing post-production versatility. 

Support for HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) is included, along with the BT.2020 color space, facilitating recording in an extensive color gamut. Furthermore, S-Log3 is available, allowing for the achievement of a dynamic range exceeding 15 stops, providing enhanced grading control particularly in the shadow to mid-tone areas of the image.

9.44m-Dot EVF and 4-Axis Multi-Angle LCD

 

 

The a7R V introduces a new and enhanced LCD design that is more functional, featuring a 4-axis multi-angle LCD monitor. This monitor effectively merges the advantages of both tilting and side-open/flip-out vari-angle configurations. The 3.2-inch LCD boasts a resolution of 2.1 million dots and incorporates a touchscreen interface along with a DCI-P3 wide color gamut for precise color representation. Additionally, the camera is equipped with an impressive QXGA OLED Tru-Finder electronic viewfinder (EVF), which offers a remarkable resolution of 9.44 million dots and a magnification of 0.9x, ensuring exceptionally bright, clear, and detailed viewing at eye level. The EVF supports 120 frames per second playback for fluid motion rendering, and its physical design includes a generous 25mm eye point and a 41° field of view. Furthermore, the outermost element of the viewfinder is treated with a fluorine coating to facilitate easier cleaning.

Versatile and Durable Design

The device features two memory card slots that are compatible with both CFexpress Type A and SD-type memory cards. This dual-slot configuration offers versatility in file storage and management, allowing users to designate specific file types for each slot or utilize one for overflow recording. Furthermore, both slots are designed to support UHS-II memory cards, enabling enhanced transfer speeds. It is equipped with a high-capacity NP-FZ100 rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which delivers approximately 440 shots or 90 minutes of recording time per charge when utilizing the viewfinder, and up to 530 shots or 100 minutes of recording time per charge when using the rear LCD.

Comprehensive weather-sealing measures, including improved sealing around the battery cover, terminal cover, and chassis joints, have been implemented to protect against dust and moisture, ensuring reliable performance in challenging weather conditions.

  • The inclusion of a full-size HDMI A port ensures a more dependable connection when interfacing with external recorders.

  • Additionally, a USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port has been introduced alongside a micro-USB port, enhancing tethering capabilities with increased speed and reliability. This USB-C connection enables the camera to be charged or powered directly from the host power source during use.

  • A PC sync terminal is available for wired flash synchronization with strobe packs or wireless radio remotes.
