The Sony FE 28-70mm f/2 GM is a versatile high-performance lens that outperforms traditional f/2.8 standard zooms with its faster f/2 maximum aperture. As Sony's inaugural GM zoom featuring a constant f/2 aperture, it encompasses a practical range from wide-angle to portrait lengths. This lens is ideal for photographers seeking to consolidate a collection of prime lenses into a single zoom without compromising on speed. It effectively covers essential focal lengths, delivers remarkably swift autofocus, and serves as a balanced solution for both photography and filmmaking requirements.
G Master Performance
Sony reserves its G Master designation for its top-tier optics, which are characterized by exceptional sharpness, exquisite bokeh, remarkable speed, and overall superior performance. The 28-70mm f/2 lens exemplifies these qualities, designed to serve as a versatile replacement for multiple prime lenses. Its constant f/2 maximum aperture is a full stop faster than that of an f/2.8 lens, enhancing its performance in low-light situations and providing enhanced control over depth of field and the separation between subjects and backgrounds. The incorporation of XA, Super ED, aspherical, and ED elements contributes to high sharpness and smooth rendering, making it suitable for a variety of subjects, including architecture, landscapes, portraits, and weddings.
The Nano AR Coating II effectively reduces flare, enhancing contrast and vibrant colors across diverse lighting environments. The floating focus design ensures consistent high image quality throughout the entire focusing range, achieving uniform sharpness from infinity down to the minimum focusing distance of 1.2 feet. Additionally, the rounded 11-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing, circular bokeh effect.
Designed for Hybrid Shooters
The 28-70mm f/2 GM lens is designed to excel in both photography and filmmaking, incorporating several advantageous features that enhance its versatility. It is equipped with four XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors, which provide rapid and responsive autofocus performance that is both quiet and smooth. This focusing system supports continuous shooting at speeds of up to 120 frames per second and high-speed video recording at rates of up to 240 frames per second.
The internal focusing mechanism facilitates faster focusing speeds while keeping the lens length consistent during operation. Additionally, the short-throw zoom design allows the lens to extend only 0.7 inches when transitioning from the 28mm to the 70mm position. Consequently, although the lens does not feature a true internal zoom, there is no need to readjust gimbal settings when altering the zoom position.
Optical focus breathing has been significantly minimized, and the lens is equipped with the Breathing Compensation feature in certain cameras, which effectively prevents shifts in the angle of view during zoom adjustments. The manual aperture ring can be modified to allow for seamless and silent transitions, while the zoom resistance can be tailored for either a smooth or firm feel, facilitating more accurate control. Weighing 2 pounds, the lens is designed with a rear-heavy distribution, ensuring a balanced structure that enhances comfort during handheld operation.
Portable and Nimble Design
- Measuring 5.5" long and weighing 2 lb, this lens is 28% larger and 24% heavier than the 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II while managing to be twice as bright.
- Manual aperture ring offers tactile exposure control and the ring can be de-clicked for smooth and silent iris pulls or it can be locked in the 'A' position for camera-based aperture switching.
- Two programmable focus hold buttons and a focus mode switch for intuitive focus control.
- Zoom smoothness switch for changing between Smooth and Tight zoom ring torque.
- Hybrid construction uses both metal and plastic components to maximize both durability and a low weight design.
- Dust- and moisture-resistant design includes rubber gaskets at each seam and a rubber ring sealing the lens mount for ensured use when working in inclement weather conditions.
- Front lens element has a fluorine coating that repels water, oil, and other contaminants and makes the lens easier to clean.
- Included lens hood features a locking button and a filter window for easier adjustment of rotating filters (e.g. polarizers, variable NDs).
