The TASCAM DR-60DmkII multitrack field recorder serves as an excellent accessory for DSLR users engaged in filmmaking, television, and web broadcasting. It allows for the capture of up to four tracks of high-resolution audio from external sources, facilitates audio routing to and from the camera, and offers convenient headphone monitoring. Designed with strap-friendly handles, a tripod mounting socket, and a camera-mount screw attachment, the DR-60DmkII is adaptable to various setups and working styles.
With its versatile powering options and remote-control capabilities, the DR-60DmkII is particularly well-suited for location recording and prolonged video shoots. It features two balanced XLR-1/4" combo inputs that accommodate both mic- and line-level signals, including +4 dBu from professional sound mixers, and can independently provide phantom power. Additionally, a 3.5mm mic/line input with selectable plug-in power is available for recording lavalier microphones or the output from wireless receivers. The device also includes modes such as stereo safety track recording, peak reduction, limiting, and auto level to ensure high-quality, undistorted recordings.
Dual XLR-1/4" Mic/Line Inputs with Independent Phantom Power
The dual locking XLR-1/4" TRS combo jacks accommodate both microphone level and +4 dBu line level signals, enabling the recording of external microphones or balanced outputs from a professional multichannel mixer. Each channel features independently switchable phantom power (24V or 48V) and provides up to 64 dB of gain. The low-noise HDDA (High Definition Discrete Architecture) microphone preamps are versatile enough to support various types of microphones, including dynamic, ribbon, and condenser models.
3.5mm Mic/Line Input with Plug-In Power
For enhanced clarity and optimal vocal quality, audio engineers frequently opt for lavalier microphones that can be affixed to the clothing of their subjects. The 3.5mm mini-jack input of the DR-60DmkII is specifically designed for this purpose; simply attach a lav mic (sold separately) to the individual, and connect it to the 3.5mm input on the DR-60DmkII. Recognizing that numerous lav mics necessitate a small amount of voltage known as plug-in power, TASCAM provides a selectable option to deliver this power to the 3.5mm input. Additionally, if there is a need to capture the output from a wireless microphone receiver or an audio mixer, the 3.5mm input is capable of accommodating such connections, as it supports both mono and stereo inputs, along with line-level signals, and can manage a maximum input level of +10 dBV.
3.5mm Camera, Line, and Headphone Outputs
The DR-60DmkII features three 3.5mm outputs, allowing for simultaneous connections to your camera, an additional recorder, and headphones. Each output is specifically assigned to a different level type—microphone, line, and headphone—and includes individual volume controls adjacent to each jack for effective level management. Furthermore, the 3.5mm camera input located on the side panel is particularly useful for straightforward playback monitoring from your camera.
Supports SDHC Cards up to 32GB
To reduce dimensions and enhance portability, the DR-60DmkII records directly onto media cards, which are sold separately. It is compatible with SD and SDHC cards, accommodating capacities of up to 32GB, thereby allowing for extended recording durations in both standard and high resolutions. Utilizing an 8GB card, the DR-60DmkII is capable of recording in stereo for more than 13 hours at a resolution of 16-bit / 44.1 kHz, employing the uncompressed, BWF-compliant WAV format.
Powered via AA Batteries, USB, or AC Adapter
The DR-60DmkII can be operated for a maximum of 4.5 hours of stereo recording at a resolution of 16-bit / 44.1 kHz using four AA alkaline batteries, which are sold separately. For extended recording sessions that necessitate longer operational time, the device can also be powered through a USB connection to a computer, a mobile battery, or the optional BP-6AA battery pack. Additionally, it can be powered using the TASCAM PS-P515U AC adapter, which is available for separate purchase.
Ideal for Tripod- or Camera-Mounted Use
The body of the DR-60DmkII is constructed from sturdy plastic, ensuring a lightweight yet robust design. Its compact dimensions, measuring only 5.25 inches in width, allow it to seamlessly integrate with camera operations without causing any obstruction. Furthermore, all batteries can be replaced without the need to detach the device from the camera or tripod/rig.
The DR-60DmkII can be positioned between a DSLR camera and a tripod, or it can be affixed to a cage or follow-focus rig. A tripod socket is located on the bottom of the unit, while a detachable tripod bracket is situated on the top. Additionally, handles on both the left and right front sides safeguard the screen and facilitate the attachment of a shoulder strap.
Soft-Touch Controls
Filmmakers and videographers frequently encounter unexpected audio volume surges while recording. An actor may unexpectedly raise their voice, or a subject in a documentary might behave unpredictably. The DR-60DmkII features a dual-recording mode that allows for the capture of a secondary version of your recording (from a selectable mono or stereo input) at a reduced level, serving as a safety track to prevent sudden distortion.
Built-In Level Modes and Signal Processing Enhance Audio Quality
Enhance the auditory quality of your recordings with the built-in level modes and signal processing features of the DR-60DmkII. Utilize the automatic level control to adjust the recording volume dynamically, accommodating instances when the input sound is either too faint or excessively loud. Additionally, activate the limiter to compress the signal prior to reaching distortion levels. During rehearsal or recording sessions, the peak reduction function automatically adjusts the input gain to an appropriate level.
To reduce wind noise and low-frequency rumble, engage the low-cut filter, which offers settings at 40, 80, or 120 Hz. During playback, you have the option to modify treble, mid, and bass frequencies to achieve a tailored output tone.
Selectable Recording Functions
The DR-60DmkII is equipped with various recording features designed to enhance your workflow and ensure that you do not miss the onset of a performance. When activated, the pre-record function allows the device to remain in standby mode, enabling it to capture up to two seconds of audio prior to the activation of the record button. Additionally, the DR-60DmkII can initiate recording based on input signals; its auto-record feature can start recording when the input reaches a user-defined decibel level of -6, -12, -24, or -48. For those intending to record themselves playing instruments such as the piano or drums, the self-timer mode can be utilized to commence recording after a delay of either 2 or 10 seconds.
Tone Generator for Synchronizing Files
An integrated tone generator facilitates the synchronization of files recorded on the DR-60DmkII with your camera. When the DR-60DmkII is linked to a camera, the adjustable slate tone can be transmitted to the camera and recorded on the DR-60DmkII. These tones serve as reference points for synchronizing files in video editing software. You can generate slate tones automatically at the beginning (or both the beginning and end) of each clip, or manually by using the slate button.
Supports External Remote Control
Hand- or foot-operated remote control is possible via the RC-3F footswitch or RC-10 wired remote (both available separately); start/stop recording, make marks, increment tracks, and more without having to touch the DR-60DmkII.
