The Canon 518-2 Zoom is a classic Super 8 motion-picture camera from the late 1960s, designed as a more affordable alternative to Canon's power-zoom-equipped models. Its standout feature is the fast 9.5–47.5mm f/1.8 five-times zoom lens, which provides considerably more flexibility than the fixed lenses found on many early Super 8 cameras. The lens uses manual zooming and manual focusing, while a TTL CdS meter provides automatic exposure based on the film cartridge's sensitivity. A built-in CCA color-conversion filter allows tungsten-balanced film to be used in daylight, making the camera considerably more versatile with the film stocks available at the time. The camera shoots at the traditional 18 fps and uses an electrically driven film transport powered by AA batteries. For modern filmmakers, the 518-2 is particularly interesting as a compact vintage Super 8 camera for fashion films, music videos, experimental work, and projects where the distinctive texture of real Super 8 film is desired.
