The Horizon Kompakt is a distinctive 35mm swing-lens panoramic camera designed around a rotating 28mm lens that sweeps across the film during exposure. Instead of producing a conventional 24 × 36mm frame, it creates a dramatically wider 35 × 58mm panoramic negative with approximately 120° horizontal coverage. The Kompakt uses a simple fixed f/8 aperture and 1/60-second shutter, making it considerably more straightforward to operate than the mechanically adjustable Horizon 202. Its completely mechanical design requires no batteries or built-in light meter, so exposure is determined using an external meter or by estimating conditions. The curved film plane and rotating lens give photographs a distinctive panoramic perspective with less conventional wide-angle distortion. It's particularly well suited to landscapes, architecture, street photography, fashion editorials, and experimental work where the unusual panoramic format is part of the aesthetic.
