From the moment you pick it up, there’s a sense of purpose to it. It’s large, yes—substantial in a way that immediately signals this is a serious piece of equipment—but that heft is part of the experience. Nothing about the RZ67 feels accidental. Every knob, lever, and surface is designed with intention.

    At its core, this is a modular medium format SLR built around the coveted 6×7 frame, often referred to as the “ideal format” for its near-perfect proportions. What that means in practice is negatives that are huge compared to 35mm—rich with detail, smooth tonal transitions, and a depth that’s hard to replicate anywhere else. Whether you’re shooting portraits, fashion, or controlled studio work, the files (or scans) you get from this system have a kind of dimensionality that feels almost tactile.

    One of the standout features—and something that sets it apart immediately—is the rotating back. Instead of awkwardly tilting the entire camera on its side for vertical compositions, you simply rotate the film back itself.     Focusing is handled through a built-in bellows system, which gives the RZ67 a level of flexibility that most medium format systems can’t match without additional accessories. The lenses themselves house leaf shutters, which means you get flash sync at all speeds—a huge advantage for studio and strobe work. The tradeoff is that the camera requires a battery to operate, but in return you get smoother operation and more modern control over exposure timing. There’s even a mechanical backup mode at 1/400 second, just in case.

    Handling the camera is a unique experience. It’s not built for speed in the traditional sense, but once you settle into its rhythm, it becomes incredibly fluid. Load film into interchangeable backs, compose, focus, fire—each step feels intentional. The shutter has a distinct, satisfying sound, and the mirror movement is substantial but well-damped.     Of course, there are trade-offs. This isn’t a lightweight system, and it’s not something you’d typically carry around all day without a reason. The maximum shutter speed of 1/400 second is limiting in bright conditions without ND filters, and handheld shooting can be a challenge without proper technique. But those limitations are part of the design philosophy—it’s a camera built for control, not spontaneity.
