The Nikon Series E 135mm f/2.8 is a manual-focus medium telephoto prime lens introduced in 1981 as part of Nikon’s more affordable Series E lineup, designed to provide much of the optical quality of contemporary Nikkor lenses in a lighter and less expensive package. It uses a 135mm focal length with a bright f/2.8 maximum aperture, making it particularly well suited to portraits, headshots, details, and compressed-perspective photography, while its 18° angle of view gives a noticeably tighter perspective than a standard lens. The optical design consists of four elements in four groups, with Nikon’s Integrated Coating providing good contrast and color rendition, and the seven-blade diaphragm can be stopped down from f/2.8 to f/32 for additional depth of field. Focusing is entirely manual with a minimum focus distance of approximately 1.5m, and the lens features a built-in telescoping hood, a 52mm filter thread, and an Ai-S Nikon F mount. Its image character is generally sharp and well controlled with pleasing subject separation at f/2.8, while its relatively simple optical design and classic coating can produce a distinctly vintage rendering compared with modern telephoto lenses.
