The FUJIFILM GFX 100S redefines medium format photography by integrating a remarkable 102MP sensor within a remarkably compact and portable mirrorless camera body. This camera caters to both photographic and videographic requirements, featuring a robust build, in-body image stabilization, and efficient autofocus, thereby enhancing its versatility for diverse shooting scenarios.

At the heart of the GFX 100S platform is the 102MP 44 x 33mm BSI CMOS sensor, which offers the ultra-high resolution coveted by stills photographers as well impressive 4K video recording options, too. The sensor pairs with the X-Processor 4 in order to output 16-bit raw imagery with a broad dynamic range, low noise levels, and sensitivity to an ISO 12800, and the BSI design of the sensor contributes to high clarity and accurate color rendering when working in a variety of lighting conditions. In terms of video, DCI and UHD 4K video recording is possible at 4:2:0 10-bit internally, 4:2:2 10-bit via HDMI, or raw 12-bit if recording externally, and an F-log gamma setting can also be used for more advanced color grading during post-production. Beyond high-resolution shooting, the unique sensor design also incorporates a sophisticated hybrid AF system that features 425 selectable phase-detection points, which cover nearly the entire frame, and aid with precise face and eye-detection modes.

Balancing the awesome sensor design is a notably compact form factor, which opens up a range of new working scenarios for this high-res platform. Sleek and lightweight, the portability of the GFX 100S is backed up by capable in-body image stabilization that compensates for up to 6 stops of camera shake for improved handheld shooting. Conversely, this stabilization system also enables making 400MP files using Pixel Shift Multi-Shot mode for extreme detail of still subjects. Also contributing to the sleek form factor is a fixed 3.69m-dot EVF for bright eye-level viewing and a rear 3.2" touchscreen LCD with a three-way tilting design.

102MP BSI CMOS Sensor and X-Processor 4

The GFX 100S features a substantial 102MP resolution BSI CMOS sensor measuring 43.8 x 32.9mm, paired with the X-Processor 4. This combination enables the capture of 16-bit still images with an extensive dynamic range and a sensitivity range from ISO 100 to 12800, which can be further expanded to ISO 50 to 102400. The large pixel size enhances light collection efficiency, resulting in smoother tonal and color transitions that create the distinctive three-dimensional appearance associated with medium format photography. Additionally, the camera supports various traditional medium and large format aspect ratios, including 1:1, 65:24, 5:4, 7:6, 3:2, and 16:9, alongside the standard 4:3 ratio, contributing to the medium format aesthetic.

The integration of the image processor and sensor provides the system with remarkable versatility, allowing for continuous shooting at speeds of up to 5 frames per second, as well as the capability to record DCI and UHD 4K30 video.

UHD and DCI 4K Video Recording

The GFX 100S leverages its large sensor size not only for still photography but also for an impressive range of video functionalities. It supports internal UHD and DCI 4K30p video recording at a maximum of 4:2:0 10-bit, as well as 4K30p 4:2:2 10-bit output via HDMI, both capable of reaching up to 400 Mb/s. Furthermore, it allows for simultaneous internal and external recording. When paired with an Atomos Ninja V, users can achieve UHD 4K30p raw 12-bit output in the Apple ProRes RAW format.

The performance of video recording is significantly enhanced by the quad-CPU X-Processor 4, which facilitates rapid read speeds during 4K video capture, thereby minimizing rolling shutter distortion when capturing moving subjects.

In addition to supporting a 10-bit color depth, the GFX 100 also features the F-Log gamma setting, which delivers a flat image suitable for advanced color grading in post-production. This capability maximizes the dynamic range in challenging scenes, allowing for adjustments in tone, shadow, color, and sharpness. The camera also supports HLG recording for HDR applications, and it is possible to utilize F-Log, HLG, and Film Simulations concurrently with raw external output.

Moreover, the camera is equipped with a 3.5mm microphone jack and a 3.5mm headphone jack, providing options for more sophisticated audio solutions.

Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization

The integrated 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization significantly reduces the visibility of camera shake, enhancing the experience of handheld shooting. This stabilization system is compatible with all lenses, including those without stabilization features; however, when paired with lenses that have Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), it can provide an impressive reduction of up to around 6 stops of shake.

Body Design

The redesigned body of the camera is significantly more compact and lightweight compared to earlier GFX 100 models, making it particularly advantageous for handheld shooting in both studio and on-location settings. The construction utilizes magnesium alloy, ensuring a balance of lightness and durability, while the weather-sealed design provides resistance to moisture, dust, and freezing temperatures down to 14°F, enabling operation in challenging environments. 

The camera is equipped with a fixed 3.69m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder, offering high-resolution, eye-level viewing with a magnification of 0.77x. Additionally, a 3.2" 2.36m-dot touchscreen LCD is available for image playback, menu navigation, and live view shooting. This LCD features a versatile three-way tilting mechanism, allowing for adjustments both upward and downward for high and low-angle shots, as well as lateral tilting for vertical orientation during live view. 

The camera is powered by a single NP-W235 rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which is capable of approximately 460 shots per charge. It includes dual UHS-II SD memory card slots, enabling sequential saving, backup/duplicate options, or organized storage for JPEG and raw files. 

The FUJIFILM G lens mount boasts a short focal flange distance of 26.7mm, facilitating lens adaptation and minimizing back focusing distances to reduce vignetting while enhancing edge-to-edge sharpness with GF series lenses. 

A 1.8" sub-LCD monitor located on the top plate allows for quick access to shooting settings and exposure information. The exposure mode dial on the top plate features six customizable positions for rapid switching between pre-set exposure configurations. Furthermore, integrated Bluetooth 4.2 low energy and Wi-Fi capabilities enable wireless image sharing to mobile devices and remote camera control.

Hybrid Autofocus System

The design of the sensor incorporates an enhanced phase-detection autofocus system, featuring 425 selectable points that span almost the entire sensor area. This autofocus system provides rapid and precise focusing performance, with low-light sensitivity reaching down to -5.5 EV. In addition to the imaging and focusing functionalities, the updated X-Processor 4 is included, which ensures swift focus response for subject tracking and supports Face and Eye Detection autofocus while operating in AF-C mode and during video recording.

Other Camera Features

• Film Simulation modes allow you to reproduce the look and feel of several of FUJIFILM's film types, including the newly introduced Nostalgic Neg. effect, along with Provia, Velvia, Astia, Classic Chrome, Classic Neg., Pro Neg. Hi, Pro Neg. Standard, Eterna, Eterna Bleach Bypass, Acros, Monochrome, and Sepia. Additionally, Grain Effect can be adjusted as well as Classic Chrome effect to fine-tune the look of imagery.
  
  
• Pixel-Shift Multi-Shot mode is capable of producing massive, 400MP images by combining 16 raw images using FUJIFILM's Pixel Shift Combiner software, which can then be output as a DNG file for further processing using most popular editing software.
  
  
• Interval shooting is possible for up to 999 consecutive frames with a 1 sec to 24-hour delay between exposures, as well as up to a 24-hour shutter delay.
  
  
• Multiple Exposure mode lets you shoot two consecutive overlaid frames, and the first frame will be shown on the rear LCD to aid in alignment for the second exposure.
  
  
• A variety of file formats are available depending on your workflow needs and include uncompressed and compressed raw file types; Super Fine, Fine, and Normal JPEG settings; and TIFF files can be output via in-camera raw file development.
