For the professional image-maker who needs resolution, speed, and video capabilities, the Canon EOS R5 full-frame mirrorless camera features a newly developed 45MP CMOS sensor, which offers 8K raw video recording, 12 fps continuous shooting with a mechanical shutter, and is the first EOS camera to feature 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization.
Beyond just resolution, the sensor also pairs with the refined DIGIC X image processor to usher in a new generation of Dual Pixel CMOS AF for quick, smooth, and intelligent focusing performance using 1053 selectable points that cover the entire field of view. This focusing system has also been updated to make use of Deep Learning technology for improved subject tracking as well as precise eye, face, and head-detection for both people and animals.
Complementing the imaging assets, the R5, while sporting a new design, also feels familiar to EOS 5-series users. An especially high-resolution 0.5" 5.76m-dot electronic viewfinder provides a realistic 120 fps refresh rate while the 3.2" rear touchscreen LCD monitor sports a vari-angle design to accommodate vlogging needs as well as benefit working from high and low angles. A top status LCD makes for an intuitive workflow and the camera also incorporates dual memory card slots—one CFexpress Type B, one SD UHS-II—along with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless connectivity.
45MP Full-Frame Sensor and DIGIC X Processor
The EOS R5 is designed around an innovative 45MP full-frame CMOS sensor, providing exceptional high-resolution still images and video capabilities. This is further enhanced by the advanced DIGIC X image processor, which delivers impressive speed. With a sensitivity range of ISO 100-51200, expandable to ISO 102400, it is well-suited for various lighting environments. Additionally, the camera supports rapid continuous shooting at up to 12 frames per second using a mechanical shutter, or 20 frames per second in silent mode with an electronic shutter, making it particularly effective for capturing dynamic subjects.
8K30 Raw and 4K120 Video Recording
The 45MP full-frame sensor offers advantages beyond still photography, facilitating remarkably high-resolution DCI 8K video recording at 30 frames per second internally. It also supports 4K recording at rates of up to 120 frames per second in 4:2:2 10-bit with Canon Log. Additionally, HDR-PQ recording is achievable, and the camera allows for in-camera HDR production. External recording via the HDMI port provides a clean 4K output at rates of up to 60 frames per second. Users can choose between All-I and IPB compression options, and Dual Pixel CMOS AF can be utilized while capturing up to 8K raw footage.
HDMI 8K Raw Output to Atomos Ninja V+
Firmware update 1.4.0 adds the ability to output 8K30, 10-bit video for ProRes raw recording to the Atomos Ninja V+ recorder over an optional HDMI cable. (Please note, the recorder may become hot.)
Dual Pixel CMOS AF II
The enhanced Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system incorporates 1053 selectable focusing points, effectively covering nearly 100% of the image frame to ensure comprehensive and uniform coverage. This advanced focusing mechanism delivers rapid and smooth focusing performance akin to that of a camcorder. It achieves this by integrating two distinct photodiodes within each pixel, creating a vast and dense array of phase-detection elements across a significant portion of the image sensor, thereby minimizing focus hunting and allowing for quicker, more precise focus control. In the context of still photography, this system excels at swiftly and accurately acquiring focus, making it particularly advantageous for capturing and tracking moving subjects, ensuring critical focus is achieved with every shot. For video recording, the Movie Servo AF mode facilitates seamless and natural focus transitions when shifting between various subjects or distances within a scene, while also allowing users to adjust tracking sensitivity, AF speed, and prioritize Face Tracking. The Touch AF feature enables intuitive rack focusing by simply tapping on elements within the scene on the touchscreen. Additionally, subject tracking in video is enhanced by the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system's capability to identify subjects and maintain focus amidst dynamic or cluttered environments.
Furthermore, subject tracking has been improved through the implementation of Deep Learning technology, which progressively enhances the focusing system's proficiency in swiftly and accurately identifying both human and animal subjects. This technology also bolsters the advanced eye, face, and head detection capabilities for both people and animals, making it particularly effective for portrait photography.
Sensor-Shift Image Stabilizer
The R5 marks a significant advancement for EOS cameras, featuring a five-axis sensor-shift image stabilization system that effectively counteracts camera shake by up to eight stops. This remarkable capability enhances handheld shooting, particularly at slower shutter speeds. Additionally, this stabilization mechanism operates in conjunction with lens-based optical image stabilization, benefiting both native RF lenses and adapted EF lenses.
Body Design and Wireless Connectivity
- High-resolution 5.67m-dot 0.5" electronic viewfinder provides a bright and detailed means for eye-level viewing and the quick 120 fps refresh rate offers natural motion rendering for a more realistic viewfinder experience.
- Rear 3.2" 2.1m-dot LCD touchscreen features a vari-angle design that benefits front-facing recording, such as for vlogging needs, as well as working from high and low shooting angles.
- Top status LCD can be used to quickly review camera and shooting settings.
- CFexpress Type B and SD UHS-II memory card slots are featured for flexible storage needs; the CFexpress slot is ideal for 8K video and high-speed, high-resolution burst shooting needs while the SD card slot retains a familiar form factor for wide compatibility.
- Both a 3.5mm headphone and a 3.5mm external microphone port are featured for improved audio monitoring and recording capabilities.
- Refined body design incorporates four distinct control dials across the body for intuitive tactile control and a joystick controller is used on the back of the camera for fast and intuitive focus point selection and menu navigation.
- Durable, weather-sealed body design is built to handle tough working conditions and inclement weather.
- Both 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi bands are available for fast file transferring to a mobile device and Bluetooth is also available to provide constant device connection via the Canon Camera Connect app.
IBIS High Resolution 400MP Files
The EOS R5, equipped with firmware version 1.8.1 or newer, is capable of producing approximately 400-megapixel files in-camera through the IBIS High Resolution shot mode, eliminating the necessity for external software. This functionality is particularly beneficial in scenarios where a high-resolution image with intricate details is essential, such as in art reproduction and signage for buildings.
