The Canon EOS R8 Mirrorless Camera is a compact and travel-friendly full-frame camera body that delivers exceptional photographic and videographic performance for both photographers and multimedia creators. It is equipped with a newly developed 24.2MP CMOS sensor, which is also present in the EOS R6 Mark II, and is complemented by a DIGIC X processor. This powerful combination ensures remarkable still image quality, stunning 4K 60p 10-bit video recording, and rapid autofocus capabilities.
24.2MP Full-Frame Sensor and DIGIC X Processing
The R8 is equipped with a robust full-frame 24.2MP CMOS sensor and the DIGIC X image processor, enabling it to produce high-resolution images characterized by vibrant and precise colors. This camera is engineered to perform effectively across various lighting environments, featuring a versatile ISO range of 100-102400, which can be extended to ISO 204800 for challenging lighting situations. It supports 6K oversampled UHD 4K video recording at 60p, utilizing the full sensor width, as well as Full HD 1080 180p for slow-motion playback. The R8 facilitates 4:2:2 10-bit recording and allows for up to 2 hours of video capture at 29.97 fps, ensuring uninterrupted project workflow. Additionally, the DIGIC X image processor is capable of handling high-speed bursts, enabling continuous shooting at rates of up to 40 fps, and includes a pre-shooting feature that captures images 0.5 seconds before the shutter release is activated.
HDR PQ and Canon Log 3
The EOS R8 camera is capable of producing remarkable video quality directly from the device. However, for content creators eager to enhance their visual storytelling, there are two advanced video recording options available: HDR PQ and Canon Log 3. HDR PQ captures a 10-bit color file that is ready for use without the need for further editing. This 10-bit HDR file is designed to be compatible with HDR displays, including televisions, monitors, and smartphones, providing superior color fidelity and dynamic range compared to standard displays. Alternatively, for those who prefer to edit their footage, Canon Log 3 offers a 10-bit log file that facilitates significant recovery of highlights and shadows, along with extensive color grading possibilities.
In-Camera Compositing
The EOS R8 camera features integrated image processing capabilities that allow for in-camera compositing. This includes functions such as Moving Subject HDR, Depth Compositing, Panoramic Shot, HDR Night Scene, and HDR Backlight control, enabling the capture of creative images that are difficult to achieve with traditional single-shot methods.
Accurate Subject Detection and Tracking
Utilizing advanced Deep Learning Technology, the system is capable of detecting a variety of subjects, including horses, trains, and airplanes, alongside traditional subjects such as humans, various animals like dogs, cats, and birds, as well as vehicles including cars and motorcycles, particularly in motorsports settings. To enhance user convenience, an Auto mode has been introduced, allowing the camera to automatically identify the type of subject without requiring manual adjustments to the Subject Detection settings in the menu. The EOS R8 camera is designed to maintain tracking of movement and provide continuous focus on the selected subject.
Head, Face, and Eye Detection
The EOS R8 camera is capable of identifying and focusing on an individual's head, face, or eye when the Subject Detection menu is configured to People. This feature enhances usability, facilitates quick subject acquisition, and increases accuracy in capturing both videos and still images, even in challenging shooting conditions where many cameras may find it difficult to recognize a subject. Furthermore, users now have the option to detect the subject's left or right eye, which can also be assigned to a Custom Button, allowing for convenient focus on the desired eye at any given moment.
Animal Detection
Accurately monitor the entire body, face, or eyes of cats, dogs, birds, and now horses, ensuring both speed and precision, irrespective of the animal's size, posture, or facial orientation.
Vertical Movie Mode and Aspect Markers
Information regarding movie rotation can be configured either during or subsequent to the recording process, enabling videos to be viewed in a vertical format on smartphones. The Aspect Markers Function presents visual indicators for various aspect ratios that may be required for sharing the same file across different social media platforms. This feature aids in ensuring appropriate composition for the diverse deliverable files that can be produced during the editing phase.
UVC Livestreaming
The compatibility of UVC/UAC enables the EOS R8 camera to function as a webcam, facilitating live video streaming in Full HD without the need for extra computer software. This feature is compatible with applications such as Zoom™, Microsoft Teams™, Skype™, and other similar video conferencing platforms. The full-frame image sensor provides flexibility in exposure settings and enhances background separation when utilizing wide aperture lenses for video conferencing or livestreaming purposes.
Vari-Angle Touchscreen LCD
The EOS R8 camera is equipped with a 3.0-inch Clear View LCD II Vari-angle Touchscreen, boasting 1.62 million dots, which facilitates effortless composition and shooting from nearly any perspective. The touch and drag feature allows for intuitive and rapid adjustment of the autofocus point directly on the touch-panel LCD.
Precise Electronic Viewfinder
The EOS R8 camera features a high-precision 0.39-inch OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) electronic viewfinder (EVF) that boasts approximately 2.36 million dots and a 22mm eyepoint, ensuring a vivid display of images along with comprehensive shooting information. This EVF is capable of supporting a refresh rate of up to 120 fps and is engineered to deliver a bright, sharp, and vibrant 100% view of the subject. Additionally, it includes an Optical Viewfinder (OVF) Simulation mode, which enhances the dynamic range of the viewfinder image, making it particularly effective in challenging, high-contrast lighting conditions.
Flexible Connectivity
- Wired and wireless connectivity options allow for multiple methods of transferring photos and videos, livestreaming, as well as for remotely controlling the camera. Physically, the camera features a remote port, a USB-C port, a micro-HDMI port, a microphone input, and a headphone jack for monitoring sound.
- Built-in Bluetooth pairing lets you easily connect the camera to compatible smart devices using the free Canon Camera Connect app. This low-energy wireless connection helps preserve battery life, while providing remote control of the camera. It also sends continuously updated GPS location data from your phone, letting you geotag what you've captured so you know precisely where you captured the photo.
- Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity enables wireless functions, such as remote live view, file viewing, and transfer, by connecting to Wi-Fi quickly and seamlessly. Using the Canon Camera Connect app, you can also transfer files to your mobile device to browse and share on social media.
- Built-in USB-C allows you to connect the camera to a smartphone or computer. All Canon Camera Connect app features that can be used with Wi-Fi are now available when the camera and smartphone are connected via USB, using a compatible cable for your device.
Next-Generation Multi-Function Shoe
The Multi-Function Shoe represents an enhancement to the traditional hot shoe by incorporating a series of pins at the front of its structure. This addition facilitates increased accessory capabilities and supplies power to certain types of accessories that typically depend on individual batteries.
