The EOS R5 Mark II Mirrorless Camera from Canon offers ample horsepower to support the highest resolution mirrorless sensor, enabling shooting at a rapid 30 fps and recording 8K60p raw video. This camera is the ideal choice for multimedia professionals seeking versatility, superior image quality, and advanced features. With a newly developed 45MP sensor featuring a stacked, back-illuminated design, paired with a new processor, this camera delivers enhancements across the board, making it a versatile tool that can handle any task.
An Integrated Sensor-Processor System
The R5 Mark II features an upgraded sensor that preserves the impressive resolution of the previous model. This new sensor utilizes a stacked, back-illuminated design to accommodate Canon's latest image processor, the DIGIC Accelerator. Working in conjunction with the reliable DIGIC X processor, the camera merges raw image data with extensive deep-learning datasets to enhance subject tracking and recognition, pre-continuous capture, blackout-free shooting, video resolution, maximum recording time, and other key features. These advancements establish the R5 Mark II as a robust and all-encompassing tool for professional creators.
Advancements in Autofocus and Deep Learning Technology
The enhanced processing speeds of the EOS R series further enhance its already strong autofocus capabilities by integrating deep learning datasets into its Dual Pixel Intelligence AF system. This results in significant advancements in subject recognition and tracking, as well as improvements to the Eye Control Focus feature first seen in the EOS R3.
The high-level analyses of the processor ensure that the intended subject remains in focus even when other similar subjects intersect. It tracks the head, eyes, upper body, and joint structures, as well as individuals other than the main subject and the ball. The Action Priority Menu setting for still photos can identify sport-specific events, actions, and ball positions for soccer, basketball, and volleyball. Additionally, it allows for the registration and prioritization of up to 10 subjects by photographing or uploading a person's image.
Eye Control Focus
Eye Control AF enables photographers to select the focus point by simply looking through the electronic viewfinder using their eye. The R5 Mark II features upgraded camera optics and an enhanced line-of-sight detection algorithm, resulting in almost twice the detection frame rate. Along with improved subject tracking and recognition algorithms, the camera combines Eye Control Focus to maintain sharp focus on the subject being viewed.
Superior still image performance with high speed and high quality
Pre-Continuous Shooting
The EOS R5 Mark II now offers the feature of capturing up to 15 shots of pre-continuous shooting by partially pressing the shutter button before taking the shot. Upon fully pressing the shutter button, the images from the previous half-second are saved to the memory card, enabling users to retrieve a crucial moment they may have overlooked.
Electronic Shutter
The new sensor-processor combination offers a range of advantages, with one of the most notable being the capability to capture high-quality, high-resolution images rapidly. This feature enables users to seize significant moments in sports, news, or history on a grand scale, with exceptional clarity. The R5 Mark II excels in preserving fleeting moments with remarkable precision, boasting continuous shooting speeds of up to 30 fps in full-frame raw format, minimizing shutter distortion. Additionally, it can achieve up to 12 fps with the mechanical shutter, while providing an always-on blackout-free display with the electronic shutter. Furthermore, for indoor sports photography, the camera effectively eliminates flicker in LED-lit environments by recognizing refresh frequencies. The electronic shutter also allows for flash sync speeds of up to 1/250s.
Noise Reduction and In-Camera Upscaling
The R5 Mark II is primarily designed for photographers and videographers who prioritize quality and versatility. Its wide native ISO range of 100-51200 makes it suitable for various lighting situations, while the DIGIC Accelerator allows for Neural Network Noise Reduction to produce cleaner images, particularly at higher ISO settings. Additionally, this processing power facilitates the generation of ultra-high resolution images, reaching up to 179MP through In-Camera Upscaling. This innovative tool utilizes deep learning to double the number of pixels both horizontally and vertically, resulting in larger, more detailed images that retain sharpness and clarity.
Coordinated Control Image Stabilization
The R5 Mark II's lightweight and compact design makes it easy for users to hand-hold the camera, resulting in improved performance. With coordinated control, optimal hand-shake correction effects are achieved, particularly beneficial for handheld shooting in low-light situations and minimizing shake during video recording. The five-axis in-body image stabilizer (IBIS) can correct up to 8.5 stops of camera shake at the center of the frame and 7.5 stops at the edges when used with compatible lenses. Moreover, Movie Digital IS combines optical, sensor-shift, and digital stabilization methods to help capture smoother footage while in motion.
An 8K Powerhouse Integrated with Cinema EOS Technology
The R5 Mark II builds upon numerous advancements that contributed to the popularity of its counterpart, the R5 C, among creators who capture both video and still images, and retains many of the features and workflow of its Cinema EOS relative. Similar to its predecessors, the 45MP full-frame sensor allows for remarkably high-resolution DCI 8K raw video recording internally, now at a maximum of 60 fps, as well as 4K SRAW at the full sensor width.
The signals for all effective pixels are read out from the full-frame 8K sensor, allowing for 4:2:2 10-bit high-definition recording through oversampling during 4K and 2K video recording. High Frame Rate (HFR) movies with sound can be recorded at up to 120p at DCI/UHD 4K resolutions (4096 x 2160/3840 x 2160) in 4:2:2 10-bit without cropping the sensor. The camera supports MXF-based XF-AVC, providing 10-bit 4:2:2 files, as well as the versatile MP4 format for lightweight proxy files in various professional workflows. External raw recording is possible with compatible recorders featuring a full-size HDMI Type-A port.
Split saving allows for raw and proxy video to be saved on separate memory cards. Canon Log3, a gamma curve designed for easy grading, is supported, along with integration with other Cinema EOS system footage. Canon Log2, PQ, and HLG in-camera custom picture profiles are also available. High-quality audio is supported with 4-Channel, 24-bit LPCM. Recording times of up to 120 minutes are achievable at 4K 60 settings and below, or with an optional grip, larger recording formats or longer recording times are possible. The camera features an integrated waveform monitor, false color & zebra display, and tally lamp. It is compatible with Canon VR and RF 5.2mm f/2.8 L Dual Fisheye lens.
