The Canon EOS R1 is designed with speed, accuracy, and dependability in mind, catering to photojournalists, sports photographers, wildlife shooters, and other professionals who require capturing the perfect shot every time. As the top-tier model in the EOS R series, this mirrorless camera features a full-frame 24MP BSI stacked sensor, advanced DIGIC Accelerator processing, cutting-edge Dual Pixel Intelligent AF, and a durable construction that meets the demands of professional use.
24.2MP Full-Frame Sensor and Continuous Shooting
The R1 boasts a state-of-the-art 24.2MP full-frame back-illuminated stacked sensor that allows for quick readout speeds and an impressive 40 fps continuous shooting rate with an electronic shutter. It also provides blackout-free viewing, minimized rolling shutter distortion, and exceptional clarity due to the back-illuminated design and DIGIC Accelerator processing. With a native sensitivity of up to ISO 102400 and Neural Network Noise Reduction, this camera delivers pristine and sharp images, especially in low-light conditions.
Continuous and Pre-Continuous Shooting
The 40 fps shooting rate is ideal for continuous shooting applications and can be combined with Pre-Continuous Shooting. This feature enables the camera to pre-buffer 20 frames over a 0.5-second period while half-pressing the shutter, ensuring that you never miss the critical moment of action. Additionally, the EOS R1 is equipped with a mechanical shutter that supports a top continuous shooting rate of 12 fps.
In-Camera Upscaling
In cases where 24MP falls short, the DIGIC Accelerator processing now allows for In-Camera Upscaling. This feature utilizes deep learning to increase the number of pixels by two times both horizontally and vertically, resulting in a distinct 96MP image within approximately 10 seconds. This upscaling can be carried out post-capture of the original image or during the image cropping process in the camera itself, thereby saving time in comparison to creating a 96MP image first and then cropping it later on.
DIGIC Accelerator and DIGIC X Processing
The EOS R1 is equipped with the newly developed DIGIC Accelerator front-engine processor, in addition to the proven DIGIC X processor. The DIGIC Accelerator is responsible for continuous shooting, subject detection and tracking, and autofocus capabilities, while the DIGIC X serves as the image processor. This combination allows the camera to process large amounts of data, perform simultaneous tasks at high speeds, and enhance the quality and accuracy of deep learning features such as In-Camera Upscaling and Neural network Noise Reduction.
- Auto-Exposure and Auto White Balance Modes use Deep Learning
- 6144-zone exposure metering for high accuracy in various lighting conditions
- Coordinated Image Stabilization pairs IBIS with Lens-Based IS
- Supports Anti-Flicker and High-Frequency Anti-Flicker shooting
Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization
The EOS R1 is equipped with a comprehensive image stabilization system that utilizes three different methods - in-body sensor-shift, optical, and a dedicated Movie Digital IS system - to ensure both photos and videos remain sharp and stable.
The 5-axis sensor-shift system of the camera body is designed to work with all lenses, reducing the impact of camera shake for improved handheld shooting at slower shutter speeds. When used in conjunction with an RF lens featuring image stabilization, Coordinated Control IS can provide enhanced stabilization, offering up to 8.5 stops of correction at the center of the frame and 7.5 stops at the edges. Additionally, for videographers, the Movie Digital IS serves as an electronic stabilization feature that minimizes blur in the outer regions, facilitating smoother handheld video recording.
Next-Generation Autofocus
Dual Pixel Intelligent AF
The primary feature of a top-tier camera is its autofocus performance, not just its speed. The R1's AF capabilities are designed to detect, track, and maintain critical focus on moving subjects, even when they are momentarily obstructed during shooting. The Dual Pixel system has been meticulously refined with various tracking features and usability assets, making it the most intelligent and intuitive focusing system in an EOS camera to date.
The sensor is equipped with cross-type Dual Pixel AF to enhance focusing performance, particularly in scenes with intricate linear details such as window blinds, brick or wooden plank walls, or patterned backgrounds. It can focus down to -7.5 EV for photos and -5.5 EV for videos in low-light conditions. Additionally, the 4897-point phase-detection system can identify People, Animals (Dogs, Cats, Birds, and Horses), and Vehicles automatically. It also features Eye Detection, allowing for the prioritization of the left or right eye.
Action Priority + Subject Detection and Tracking
The DIGIC Accelerator offers a new focusing mode designed for capturing sports and action: Action Priority. This intelligent AF mode identifies the movements of specific subjects and automatically adjusts the AF area to the player engaged in a detected motion, such as shooting, passing, jumping, and more.
It currently supports Soccer, Basketball, and Volleyball activities and can analyze Ball, Joint, Torso, Action, and Head information for tracking. The mode can identify specific subjects and utilizes this information along with recognized movements to decide where to focus in the scene as the action unfolds.
- Action Priority can be assigned to a custom function button for quick on/off toggling.
- The Pre-Registered Person Priority feature enables you to pre-register a maximum of 10 individuals on your camera before capturing an event; this data is saved and utilized to determine priority subjects during the game or match.
- Advanced subject recognition technology ensures that the intended subject remains in sharp focus, even if it is partially obscured or intersected by another subject within the frame.
- Can be used in conjunction with Pre-Continuous Shooting mode.
Eye Control AF
The R1, derived from the EOS R3, features the exclusive Eye Control AF system that enables users to effortlessly direct focus by simply looking at the desired area and pressing the AF activation button. Enhancements in the R1 include a 2x faster detection speed, an updated line-of-sight detection algorithm, and improved compatibility with various eyelid thicknesses, eyelash lengths, camera handling positions, and even eyeglass wear.
Dependability and Professional Design.
9.44m-Dot OLED EVF and Rear LCD
Regarded as the finest viewfinder available in an EOS R-series camera, the R1 features a remarkable 9.44m-dot OLED EVF with a substantial 0.9x magnification for convenient, sharp, and luminous eye-level observation. The resolution and magnification are well-suited for various viewing environments, making it perfect for users who wear glasses, and the optical design of the viewfinder has been enhanced for better clarity. Furthermore, certain EVF optics are enclosed in an airtight structure to avoid fogging when operating in extreme temperature or humidity conditions.
