The Sony a6600 is a compact and fully-equipped APS-C-format mirrorless camera that prioritizes speed and versatility, making it ideal for capturing both still images and video. It is equipped with an updated 24.2MP CMOS sensor, enabling the production of high-resolution photographs and UHD 4K video without any recording time restrictions. Additionally, it offers enhanced processing capabilities, quicker autofocus, and in-body image stabilization, which contributes to steadier shooting in challenging lighting environments.
24.2MP Exmor CMOS Sensor and BIONZ X Processor
An updated APS-C-format 24.2MP Exmor CMOS sensor delivers refined and detailed image quality with minimal noise and exceptional sensitivity ranging from ISO 100 to 32000, which can be further extended to ISO 102400 for optimal performance in low-light environments. This sensor incorporates a distinctive design featuring thin copper wiring, improved circuit processing, and an advanced front-end LSI, all of which enhance light-gathering capabilities, diminish noise, and accelerate readout speeds, thereby benefiting video recording. The synergy between the sensor and the BIONZ X processor enables a maximum continuous shooting rate of 11 frames per second with autofocus and auto exposure, while also allowing for 16-bit recording with 14-bit raw file output, resulting in a broader tonal and color range.
UHD 4K Video Recording in XAVC S Format
UHD 4K video recording is achievable at frame rates of up to 30p, employing full pixel readout combined with 6K oversampling to enhance detail while minimizing moiré and aliasing effects. Additionally, Full HD 1080p recording is supported at frame rates reaching 120 fps. Both resolutions utilize the 100 Mb/s XAVC S format encapsulated in an MP4 wrapper with 4:2:0 sampling. Beyond high-resolution internal recording, the uncompressed HDMI output facilitates the connection of an optional external recorder, allowing for pristine 4K recording with 4:2:2 sampling. There are no limitations on movie recording duration, enabling extended takes and seamless coverage of live events.
The camera offers extensive customizable options for color and gamma settings, allowing users to modify gamma, black level, knee, color level, and more. It features the S-Log2 Gamma Curve, similar to that found in high-end Sony Cinema cameras, which captures up to 1300% more dynamic range in the video signal compared to traditional Rec. 709, thus providing greater flexibility in post-production. Support for HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) is also included, along with the BT.2020 color space, facilitating recording within a broad color gamut. In addition to S-Log2, S-Log3 is available, enabling an effective dynamic range of 14 stops with enhanced grading control in the shadow to mid-tone areas of the image.
The Slow & Quick (S&Q) mode enables users to record Full HD video at adjustable frame rates ranging from 1 to 120 frames per second. This feature facilitates the ability to either decelerate fast-paced action or accelerate scenes that progress slowly.
The interval shooting mode is particularly suited for producing time-lapse films, utilizing Imaging Edge software. Users can choose intervals from 1 to 60 seconds, allowing for the recording of up to 9999 consecutive frames.
Fast Hybrid AF System
Encompassing almost the entire sensor region, an advanced 4D FOCUS system integrates 425 on-chip phase-detection points in conjunction with 425 contrast-detection zones, allowing for accurate focusing in as little as 0.02 seconds. The concentration of focusing points provided by this hybrid autofocus system facilitates Real-time Tracking for intelligent subject monitoring, as well as Real-time Eye AF, which focuses on the eyes of identified subjects for portrait photography, applicable to both humans and animals. This functionality is available in both AF-S and AF-C modes, suitable for capturing still images or video.
Real-time Eye AF For Human
The Real-time Eye AF feature enables ongoing eye tracking during the capture of moving portraits. Users have the option to prioritize either the left or right eye, and this functionality remains effective even when the subject's face is partially obscured, illuminated from behind, or tilted downward. This technology allows for focus to be centered on the eyes of identified human subjects in portrait photography and is compatible with both AF-S and AF-C modes, applicable to both still images and video recordings.
Real-time Eye AF For Animals
Eye autofocus functionality is applicable for capturing images of animal subjects as well, regardless of the focusing mode employed for still photography. Sony's advanced eye-detection algorithms have been modified to accommodate both animals and humans, enabling the creation of sharply focused portraits of pets and stunning wildlife photographs.
Smooth Focus Transition
The focus area will automatically and seamlessly transition between the subject's face and eyes, depending on the condition of the subject being tracked.
Real-Time Tracking With Touch Tracking
The Touch Tracking feature allows you to effortlessly touch the monitor to activate Real-time Tracking for both photographs and videos.
5-Axis SteadyShot INSIDE Image Stabilization
Housed within the sleek design is a highly effective 5-stop, 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE image stabilization system, which addresses five distinct types of camera shake that may occur during handheld photography and videography. This feature empowers users to utilize any lens, including adapted ones, for precise imaging without the risk of blur caused by camera movement.
For longer focal lengths, the system adeptly corrects for pitch and yaw movements. In contrast, macro and high-magnification photography will gain from the added horizontal and vertical shift compensation. Additionally, all shooting techniques will benefit from the roll stabilization. Notably, all five axes of stabilization remain operational at all times, even when employing third-party lenses and adapters or lenses equipped with built-in optical stabilization.
Body Design
The XGA Tru-Finder, featuring a 2.36 million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder, provides a luminous and high-resolution option for eye-level observation. It also includes a specialized 120 fps mode, enhancing the viewing experience when following moving subjects. The rear 3.0-inch LCD touchscreen, with a resolution of 921.6k dots, is capable of tilting 180° upward or 74° downward, facilitating work from both elevated and lowered perspectives.
The inclusion of integrated 3.5mm headphone and microphone ports enhances audio management during video recording. The NP-FZ100 rechargeable lithium-ion battery is capable of approximately 810 shots per charge when utilizing the LCD screen. Furthermore, the a6600 can be powered through a USB connection to a computer or mobile battery, which also allows for battery charging. Its robust magnesium alloy construction provides a resilient profile, complemented by dust and moisture seals to safeguard against challenging conditions. Additionally, a sturdy metal lens mount offers improved support for larger and heavier lens configurations. The ergonomic grip design is well-suited for extended shooting sessions and ensures convenient access to the primary control buttons and dials.
Connectivity
The a6600 features integrated Wi-Fi, allowing for immediate sharing of images to mobile devices, facilitating direct uploads to social media platforms, email, and cloud storage services. The connected mobile device can also provide a live view display and enable remote shutter control for the camera. Additionally, Bluetooth connectivity supports the acquisition of location data. The camera is equipped with NFC (Near Field Communication) technology, enabling a seamless one-touch connection with compatible mobile devices, eliminating the need for complicated setup procedures.
