61MP Exmor R CMOS Sensor and BIONZ XR Processor

The advanced imaging system of the Sony a7CR is driven by a 61MP Full-Frame Exmor R CMOS sensor in conjunction with the BIONZ XR processor. This powerful pairing delivers exceptional resolution, remarkable clarity, minimal noise, and an extensive 15-stop dynamic range. Regarding shooting capabilities, the sensor and processor facilitate shooting speeds of up to 8 frames per second with the mechanical shutter and 7 frames per second with the electronic shutter, all at full resolution while maintaining continuous autofocus and auto exposure. When capturing in JPEG format, it is possible to record over 1000 frames in a single burst. The design of the sensor enhances image quality significantly, and the inclusion of a copper wiring layer greatly accelerates data transmission, allowing for the creation of 14-bit, high-resolution 61MP images with a native sensitivity range of ISO 100-32000, which can be further extended to ISO 50-102400.

Improved Processing Engine

The latest BIONZ XR processing engine delivers up to eight times the processing performance of its predecessors, facilitating enhanced overall efficiency, remarkable image quality with extensive sensitivity and dynamic ranges, and smoother processing that adeptly manages a variety of AI functions and intelligent autofocus in conjunction with imaging tasks. Additionally, this processing system minimizes rolling shutter effects and other motion distortions, ensuring clear rendering of moving subjects.

Pixel Shift Multi Shooting

This distinctive compositing mode enables the attainment of a resolution that surpasses the capabilities of the 61MP sensor. By collaborating with the sensor-shift image stabilization, this mode shifts the sensor while capturing 16 consecutive images, resulting in approximately 240.8MP of data. This process enhances color accuracy and detail beyond what a single exposure can achieve, yielding an impressive image size of 19,008 x 12,672 pixels. Subsequently, these files can be combined in post-production utilizing the Sony Imaging software suite.

Accurate Exposure and Color

The a7CR employs advanced AI-driven algorithms, such as Human Pose Estimation, to identify skin regions, thereby enhancing exposure balance during portrait photography. This automatic exposure technique demonstrates an increase in reliability of approximately 20%, even under challenging lighting conditions such as backlighting or direct sunlight, and when the subject is not oriented towards the camera. Additionally, the integration of deep learning technology, in conjunction with external visible light and infrared sensors, further improves color accuracy and automatic white balance adjustments.

Image Stabilization

The camera now features an advanced shake compensation system with seven stops, utilizing a pixel-level 5-axis optical image stabilization mechanism. This system effectively addresses five distinct types of camera shake that may occur during handheld photography and videography. It is algorithmically refined for precise detection and control at the pixel level. Additionally, the AI Processing Unit enhances the interaction between the camera body and the lens, ensuring more stable framing prior to capturing images. As a result, users can confidently employ any lens, including adapted ones, for critical imaging tasks without the risk of blur caused by camera shake.

Next Generation AI-Based Autofocus

The a7RC's autofocus system is significantly enhanced through dedicated processing, which provides advanced subject tracking and recognition features, complemented by the dependable hybrid AF system characteristic of Alpha cameras. The Real-time Recognition AF operates with seven distinct selectable target types.

The α7CR, equipped with its advanced AI processing unit, is capable of utilizing subject form data to effectively identify movement, resulting in a notable enhancement in the recognition of human eyes. The technology for human pose estimation is adept at detecting not only the eyes but also the positions of the body and head with remarkable accuracy. This capability allows for the tracking and locking onto a subject who may be turned away from the camera or whose face is partially hidden by accessories such as helmets or sunglasses.

The AI processing unit enhances its capabilities by recognizing a broader variety of subjects, including the eyes of a greater diversity of grazing animals, small creatures, and birds. A newly integrated Animal/Bird setting removes the need for manual switching. Additionally, it can identify the entirety or the front sections of vehicles such as cars, trains, and airplanes, as well as the heads of insects.

The activation of AI-based Real-time Tracking is achieved by identifying the subject and performing a half-press of the shutter button. The camera autonomously follows the subject, allowing the user to focus on composing the shot. Enhancements in subject recognition and tracking dependability have been significantly advanced, accommodating a broader array of shooting scenarios.

Advanced Fast Hybrid AF

The Fast Hybrid AF system covers 79% of the full-frame image area and 100% of the APS-C cropped area, featuring a comprehensive grid of 693 phase-detection points. This configuration allows for rapid and accurate focusing across various lighting conditions, with sensitivity reaching as low as -4 EV. This focusing mechanism is accessible in all recording modes, enhancing both video and still photography applications. The full-time Direct Manual Focus (DMF) feature permits the use of the lens's focus ring for manual adjustments at any moment, facilitating a seamless transition to different subjects even while utilizing autofocus. For capturing moving subjects, this AF system supports continuous shooting speeds of up to 10 frames per second, ensuring consistent autofocus tracking throughout each frame. Additionally, in-camera focus bracketing is available, allowing for the capture of up to 299 frames with incrementally adjusted focus points, which aids in producing composite images with an extended depth of field during post-production.

AF During Video Recording

Real-time Eye AF is fully operational during video recording, enabling the detection and tracking of human, animal, and bird eyes while filming. The Focus Map feature provides a distinctive method for visualizing depth of field, functioning similarly to peaking by overlaying the scene with colors that indicate which areas are in front of or behind the focus point, based on the selected aperture. The AF Assist feature, inherited from the FX6 digital cine camera, allows for a seamless transition to manual focus control, facilitating adjustments to the focus position while utilizing autofocus. This feature offers a rapid means to shift selective focus among various subjects within a scene during recording. Additionally, Focus Breathing compensation serves as a specialized solution to address the performance of certain lenses when adjusting focus. This feature automatically smooths focus transitions and preserves a consistent field of view when altering the focus position during a shot, slightly cropping into the image to correct for any detected compositional shifts that occur during focusing.

Video Recording

Capture full-frame 4K video at 60 frames per second in 10-bit 4:2:2 using the sophisticated XAVC S-I format, ensuring reliable performance and high quality at bitrates reaching 600 Mb/s. When recording externally through the full-size HDMI port, 16-bit raw output is available, providing enhanced tonal reproduction and increased flexibility in post-production. In the case of utilizing a Super 35 crop, full pixel readout recording can be achieved at UHD 4K with frame rates up to 30p, or alternatively, 6.2K oversampling can be employed for improved sharpness and detail. Raw output is compatible with recording up to 4K at 60p, and simultaneous internal 4K recording is also feasible. For Full HD recording, high-speed options allow for 120 fps, enabling slow-motion playback at 4x or 5x with frame rates set to either 30p or 24p.

The S-Log3 and S-Gamut3.Cine Gamma Curves provide an impressive dynamic range exceeding 15 stops, enhancing flexibility in post-production and facilitating the integration of footage from various Sony Cinema Line cameras. S-Cinetone is designed to produce vibrant colors and natural skin tones, drawing on the advanced technology of professional Cinema Line cameras like the VENICE. This color profile is characterized by its natural mid-tones, gentle hues, and well-managed highlights. Additionally, Creative Looks can be incorporated directly into the recorded footage, allowing for the establishment of a specific atmosphere during filming and reducing the necessity for extensive editing. Furthermore, users can create and apply their own LUTs and presets for precise monitoring of footage or for previewing a desired aesthetic during shooting, which can be utilized on the camera's monitor, electronic viewfinder, or HDMI output.
